I bought an axle with 4.8 gears and had to swap them to my 3.54s. The pinion gear is hard to turn when the carrier is installed. Could this be that I need to take some of the shims off of the pinion shaft? I've got all the proper torque specs and all but I don't want to burn my axle bearings out or tear my teeth apart.

well if the assembly is dry it will be harder to turn and you are turning more than just the pinion at that point. Also pinion preload for a d30 is 12-15 inch pounds for new bearings and 6-8 inch pounds for used. Backlash .006-.010", How much carrier preload do you have? This is the best way I have found. Add between .003 and .008 to the shim set (equally to each side) AFTER setting the backlash, this will preload the carrier bearings. Preload for the carrier bearings ensures longer life to them. The pinion preload should not change drastically after the carrier is installed.

(11) Check bearing rotating torque with an inch
pound torque wrench (Fig. 56). The torque necessary
to rotate the pinion gear should be;
• Original Bearings — 1 to 3 Nm (10 to 20 in. lbs.).
• New Bearings — 2 to 5 Nm (15 to 35 in. lbs.).
