Hello 99xjbuiltnotbought
im looking at doing a similar swap where did you mount the regular gas tank?
or how did you manage to stop the liquid propane from frosting and run it only on propane?
thx
I get about 170 to 180 miles from the 70* litre propane tank which goes with this setup. That's back roads, so not easy on mileage. I can run on either fuel and she starts on petrol when cold and switches to LPG (propane) at about 2 bars from full cold on the water temp gauge (40 degrees C)
*70litres is the gross size. At 80% fill which is the legal limit (here at least) it works out at 56 litres useable.
Old thread...but what the heck...
I used to live in South Australia...and this type of conversion was sooo popular for cars of all kinds because petrol was always so darn expensive.
When I left for the US 2 yrs ago petrol was averaging 1.30-1.50 per litre
Now they didn't call it propane, but LPG (Liquifed Petroleum Gas) and that was only about 70 cents a litre...
of course it shortened the lifespan but most over there didn't seem to care even on older cars that didn't have internals to really handle it.
Engine life will be fine on a 4.0 the engines that suffer are the ones with soft valve seats. With an iron head, the XJ is fine on LPG unless you run it lean, which will break anything.
Yeah that's true there Morat... I don't think I saw a single LPG conversion in Aus on an XJ... it was mostly old (almost vintage age) holden utes and ford falcons, etc.
So I found this thread looking for info on a Bi-fuel kit I found local to me. This kit was rumored to have been originally installed on a military owned 1996 XJ cherokee. I picked it up for a case of beer. It is missing the tank and 1 hose from what I can tell. But it was upfitted in the mid 90's before service. I've found very little online, but what I have found was that it was optioned for state/gov't owned vehicles. I found 1 thread on a guy in north texas whod purchased a donor vehicle with the kit on it. He listed it for sale in 2013. I Believe this to be the very same kit I have come into owning now. I believe this because I live only a couple dozen miles away from him and I havent seen or read much of aanything online so I imagine these are few and far between.
Its controller is labeled "duel curve" so that's where I started. I found it to be a product made by Holley/MSD. I reached out and they provided me with a 2 page addendum for the 1996 cherokee 4.0 ltr wiring install. I need more.
I'm looking for a full wiring diagram and install manual.manudetailed images of a kit installed. Anything will help. I plan on having this successful running in my 1996 XJ one day.
Looks like you have the heat exchanger, propane carburetor, and timing module, what else do you need to know? I used to install those systems in the 90's, but that has been a few years...
