is it difficult to install the oil pan with only silicone ?(is it easy to mess up the layer)

do i let it dry until it's tacky? or do i throw it on while the silicone is still fresh??

is this just a bad idea??

how much silicone the more the merrier??

thank you all for your help..
That's funny - I go the other way. 1996-up moulded rubber gasket (Victor/Reinz if I can get it, Fel-Pro if I can't,) and don't overtorque the screws (7 pound-feet for the 1/4"-20x1/2", 11 pound-feet for the 5/16"-18x3/4") I don't bother with RTV, it's usually not needed.

my 2 cents...LOL KTM has the best advice.

And on another note: I repair Heavy Diesel engines, and International trucks use a special Silicone Adhesive that tacks up in 20 minutes and hardens like cement in just under 12 hours. You can pull all 20 bolts off the oil pan and beat on it with a sledge hammer for 20 minutes and if your lucky it will begin to budge. In a pinch one day, doing the transmission service on my Dakota pickup, I was miffed to find that the gasket was the wrong one, and the parts houses were closed (fixing it in the shop after hours) I had a tube of International sealer and used it! 30,000 miles later I had to replace the pan because I had to beat the monster off with a hammer.....but it never leaked a drop....LOL
