Jeepsurfer1 Thanks for the advice. guys I'm not looking to put more money than I have to. The rig is good but I would buy a newer one later on in life that I can build with quality parts and cash. This one how ever is a bucket that I want to use to go out shooting since I go out in to the desert/mountains. And I hate taking my 4cyl car.

Just a heads up, if you lift this jeep past 3". The transfer case is much closer to the front axle, than it is with the straight six models. This means you'll need a high angle front driveshaft, without it will cause binding and serious wear on the transfer case. Good luck!!

No, but you do have a V6 2.8l. This setup will require a high angle front driveshaft to avoid binding. You may be able to find one from a zj, or buy one from Tom woods for $700.

this is a pretty decent list of what junkyard stuff will fit and how it will benefit you. also tells wether its a bolt on or modification needed thing.

Fellow '86 owner here. I've never been sorry that I chose to build my xj, 2.8L and all. It does everything I need it to. I built mine on the cheap as well: xj/xj bastard pack, 3" coils, and JK shocks. The biggest issue you're going to run into though is the front driveshaft. When I first lifted my Jeep, I started at 2" and the front ds would bind and pop. When I went to 3" I had a buddy shorten a ds off of an Explorer for me and I run it single cardan. You can also use a 4cyl, 5 spd double cardan ds as well, I just couldn't find one in the JYs around here. If you plan on going higher, you'll have to either do a hack and tap for the rear ds or switch to a NP231 and use a sye. Here's my build thread, you can see what I've gone through so far on mine: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f46/em...-v1-0-a-97222/

Yeah your right, it's still a jeep. I just wanted to make sure you knew that the early models are a pain in the ***. You've been warned, I rest my case. Let me know if you have any questions. I know the early models really well and would be glad to help a fellow jeeper out .

Thanks bro^ I'm having another issue. The last owner had the steering stabalizer changed and the joint thing( I don't know what it's called) and now it turns to the right about 2 almost 3 turns of the steering wheel and to the left like only 1 turn.
What do u guys think it is? I'm thinking it has to do with the adjustment of the joint deal cuz it had threads on both sides. Like they didn't turn it enought to one side.

Another issue is it has alot of play in the steering wheel I know it's the Pittman arm(I'm sure lol not 100%) what's ur guys input on these issues.

Not really, 15x8's are the ones you'd want. I believe the stock rims are 15x6s.
