Default New to me XJ- brake problems

Hello all,

New to the jeep scene here just picking up my first XJ, a 98' abs with 164k on it.

I'm having a pretty tough time with the brakes which I'm thinking shouldn't be to difficult.

I replaced the apparent leaking line from the proportioning valve to the front left wheel, bleeding all brakes and the 11/16" nut on the master cyclinder and still can't get a pedal. The brakes will work with the pedal almost all the way down then the abs will start going crazy and pushing against the pedal.

No leaks that I can see on the ground or visually inspected from underneath. Nothing else I can think of to do. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Bleeding ABS is a pain.

ABS system bleeding requires conventional bleeding methods plus use of the DRB scan tool. The procedure involves performing a conventional bleed, followed by use of the scan tool to cycle and bleed the HCU pump and solenoids. A second conventional bleed procedure is then required remove any air remaining in the system.

AKA rip the ABS pump out and get rid of ABS all together or bring your jeep to a shop.

^x2^

Then one step further rip out the D "Turdy Five" and replace with a Chy 8.25 10x stronger and you don't have all the problems with ABS for off road use. At times the ABS can be dangerous in some trail situations at the worst possible times.

Thanks for all of the responses. How hard is it to DISABLE the abs..not really remove it? Just in case I ever want to re hook it back up at a later date.

Can I just take the lines going to the abs unit from the master and disconnect them, then block them off or something? I could be totally off there but hopefully someone can elaborate on what I would have to do.

On my 89 I had abs. It worked great but I swapped it out for a 91 master cylinder pedal assembly and proportioning value. Much cheaper when buying parts when they go bad better pedal feel. Plus I sold the abs unit for the same what I picked the parts up for so it was a free upgrade. Lol
