Default New locker

I just finished with the gear replacement on the Chrysler 8.25 and if anything could go wrong it did ! I had to take it completly down again but she's quiet as a mouse, not even a wimper of a whine (for now). Anyway, I just installed a Spartan lunchbox up front and think I want to put one in the rear at my 500 mile oil change. My spyder gears are wore pretty badly, so I either will have to replace them or install the locker. I have a 96 with 27 spline axles. The Spartan clicks real nicely in sharp turns in the Dana 30 and I do not want to remove that ring gear in the 8.25 ever again! Here's the million dollar question. 1. What options do I have as far as lunchboxes for the 27 spline in the 8.25?
2. Will two lockers cause me problems for a DD? (Oh yea, we don't have smow this far south)

options for auto lockers by brand..
  • Auburn High Performance Limited Slip
  • Detroit Locker
  • Powertrax Lock-Right
  • Powertrax No-Slip
as far as being locked in the rear, be prepared for increased tire wear in the rear and slight chirping around corners under throttle. Both these things can be prevented by learning how to drive on street locked (moslty coasting thru corners)

you should be fine to install without removing the ring gear in the rear.
i had to remove my front ring gear, but my buddies d35, we didn't have to.
so not sure about the 8.25, but you should be fine there.

i have aussies front and rear and haven't experienced barely any chirping or tire wear. like tanner said, it's all about how you drive. dont hammer down in the corners take it lightly.

also, i'm pretty sure in their directions powertrax says to grind down a bit of the ring gear to slide the cross shaft out. you should look into that as thats the route quite of people take with the 8.25

you shouldn't have to do this on your 8.25 UNLESS you have aftermarket gears. The cross pin clears the ring gear just fine. should take you an hour to do the install.
hence the name lunchbox locker, it fits in a lunchbox and can be installed on your lunch hour

yes I know, but he stated he replaced the gears, which makes me assume he still has stock gearing..

Like I said, shouldn't need to grind the ring gear to clearance the cross pin unless OP installed aftermarket (taller) gears.

I just have a problem taking a grinder to shiny new ring gears, I just assume remove the carrier, the 8.25 doesn't use shims so it's easy to get put back in.

I did change the gears to 4.10. But my cross pin will still go in and out without hitting. Superior gear has a bevel toward the pin all the way around for pin removal I just am undecided about two lunchboxes. I guess that's just two lunch breaks, huh? Wasn't sure how two of them would handle on the road.
Thanks,
Don

I put a Detroit in my D35 and my XJ is my daily. Other then learning a different way to drive I have had no trouble adjusting to driving a locked daily driver.

Thats fine and dandy, but thats not what OP is asking. As far as I know Aussie doesn't make a locker for the 27 spline 8.25. they do however make them for the D30 and D35 (which OP doesn't have in the rear).

im pretty sure Spartan doesn't make one for the 8.25, but as others have said you need to drive it different with two lockers. coasting the corners and you will get some tire ware in the rear for sure.
