Default new diff cover ?

I'm going to install a new Ruff Stuff diff cover today(actually 2). My question is: it has a large threaded stainless steel plug, do I put teflon tape on the threads to help it seal? Or anything else? Thanks

Teflon tape doesn't really make the seal it allows the plug to come out easier. the thread on the plug are tapered and that makes the seal.

Ok, I guess I'll use it then. I did notice the tapered threads, just wasn't sure about the seal. Thanks for input.

One more question. I bought ultra grey RTV silicone, the directions say dry to touch in one hour, fully cured in 24 hrs. It didn't say when I could put the gear oil in. Do I have to wait the full 24 hrs?

I don't know about the ultra grey. I always use mopar axle rtv. Probably the same stuff. But I put it on the cover, put the cover on and fill it. Done hundreds like this and never has a leak. Seems silly to let it dry for an hour before you put the cover on.

You could always buy a pair of lube lockers instead of using the rtv.

As far as waiting an hour to mate the surfaces, directions say mate the surfaces immediately. Its taking a long time for the old gear oil to quit trickeling out. Guess I shoulda driven it further than I did, to heat it up a little. Thanks again for input

use RTV ultra black. put on the diff cover and fill it up and torque that fill plug down. if it leaks then take it off and use some RTV on it or something

mine didn't leak. no reason to make a mess out of the threads if you don't have to

Only reason I let it dry for a bit is cause I don't have to worry about smearing the rtv as much if I don't line it up correctly. I have done it right after I put it on and it was successful
