Have been through all 17 pages, searched all rear-end post, still no viable answer, so here goes

I have a thump, thump, thump sound coming from the rear of the xj, but
only when braking at a lower speed and in a straight line. nothing at any other time, only when coming to a stop or braking for a turn and at speeds below 20-30 mph to zero (slowing down or coming to a stop)

It don't bother me that much, but the better half is sure that were domed to a devastating malfunction that will leave us in the wilderness to be eaten by wolves. So if you have any answers please help so I can alleviate this doomed aberration, drive my Jeep in peace w/out her prophecies of sheer death & destruction while on the way to pick up the mail.

And NO leaving her at home is not an option!!(even though a good one)

Had that exact same problem on my stock setup. Threw in 4.5 in springs, driveshaft and SYE. Went away. Doesn't answer the question but hope it helps.

You did good searching but have you actually looked under your jeep??? It's a two way street, search to get an idea and then get down under and start looking/fiddling lol

Broken cords in the tires. A bubble forming. Need drums turned. Bent axle shaft. Bent drive shaft. Bent rim. Bearings need replaced...etc. There's lots of things it could be. You need to climb under there and try to find out what is causing it then fix it.

Default ok now

as for suggestions as to lets have a look & use common sense.

Bent drive shaft, bent axel , bubble or cords separating on tires, I'm sure all of the above would be present at any speed so I'm inclined to go w/drum out-of round although I have had some pulsing of the break pedal but assumed that to be front issue since 3/4 of braking is on the front disc.
so out comes the dial indicator & will check drums for trueness, we shall see.

Thank guys, tomorrow I'm knee deep in the hoopla & will check back with a solution or cause or whetever

I'm thinking one of your drums is not running very true. That would make the most sense to me.
