My version of a cowl snorkle
Since you got the idea from a guy on the Jeepforum, I really don't think you "own" this thread anyway.
Great work on your set up and once I find a way to run this with the ABS I will definitely do a write up. Then you can come hijack my thread. haha!

This is the same thread that Troy Fritzz or what ever his name started. All I have to say is what you did (although you did it well) IS NOT A SNORKLE that is plane and simple. You rased your intake 4-5" that is not a snorkle. What you did is a COWL INTAKE. You did a good job at it no need to lie and call it a snorkle. Be proud of what you have done and don't try to pass it off as something it is clearly not. If you want to call it a snorkle you should call your 4.0 a 4.7 and your D30 a D60 and your 8.25 a D60 your np231 a dabbler and your 35's a set of 52's. You get the point???????????? Don't lie. Be proud of what you did. This is a snorkle that goes through the cowl or a cowl snorkle.

yea...i'm going to have to disagree with you there brutalxj. To me an "intake" makes no efforts to prevent water intrusion. Snorkel implies the ability to submerge part of the vehicle without impacting the engine.
My design is sealed to allow for this. True...my inlet is not as high as yours, but I never intend on getting water above my cowl, and can't really see many situations where this would happen anyways even if you tried. And you bash my design because it's not the norm? This design raises the inlet by well over 4-5", more like 12-14", and more importantly it moves the inlet backwards to prevent water intrusion when dunking the front end.
You know why most snorkels are has high as yours? I'll give you a hint - NOT water. They were made that high so that vehicles in the outback following another in a convoy could have mostly dust-free air being sucked in - the height advantage gave them that.
So basically, listen to the old saying "if you have nothing nice to say..don't say anything"

Well I think ur design is better then the typical snorkel. It's in the perfect place in my eyes. No way I will be going in water deep enough to come up that high. Plus its on the passenger side, less heat, and I'm sure sucks in plenty of clean cool air. I like it so much I am planning on doing it myself very soon. It may not be the typical snorkel design but its more unique in my eyes.

I have a 93ZJ with ABS. The basic lay out is the same as the Cherokee, my question is when takeing the hose to the other side (I have to cross the engine since I have ABS stuff) what would be the smallest dia hose (pipe) I could get away with? This would be the hose running from the box to the cowl.

I wouldn't go any smaller than 2.5" ID before it starts restricting airflow. I've seen people use the bendy flex hose and be ok - that will deform easily over the valve cover in case of clearance issues.

I was actually looking on eBay and found a few intake pipes on there that would work. One guy was actually selling 7 or so tubes/pipes...3 straight and a few bent ones at different degrees. It was around 30 bucks. But if you type in cold air intake you can eye ball a few and see what would work. I seen one for an s10 I believe....one pipe had a 90 degree bend near one end and then there was a second pipe that was straight. Gonna buy that kit. Should work out. I think its under 30 bucks too. Worth a shot. Although I will buy a better filter before the install.

It CAN be done with the ABS pump still in there but it's a PITA to get it in there. You'll need to relocate the airbox slightly to ease the bend right out of the air box. I used the 3 inch flex hose from Advance Auto and some other accesories and it now works perfectly. No water at all either. Thanks to all those who did this before me, posted pics and gave out their secrets!
