first off the D30 is a front axle, you more than likely have a C8.25 rear or the D35. and to answer your question. No its not worth putting that type of $ into a D35 or C8.25 when you can go to a ford 8.8 or a 9" rather cheaply.

Actually, if you have a C/8.25 and are only planning on running 31-32 inch tires it would be a total waste of money to swap in a Explorer 8.8, plus you lose so much clearance with them on small tires. The stock D/30 and C/8.25 will handle those tires without upgrades, if you want lockers a couple of lunch box lockers will not sit you back all that much.

I do not agree completely.
Dana 35. Not worth putting any money in.
C8.25 is a very good axle for 31-33 inch tires. Parts are cheap and abundant they are easy to work on. I have abused the crap out of my 8.25 with 31s and 32 inch swampers and never had an issue.

Someone gave me a 4.10 geared 8.8 so its going in my rig as the D35 has been rebuild almost a year ago and is eating axle seals.
* Warning* do not dump a bunch of cash into the D35 its just not worth it. I put in a set of gears all new bearing plus 1 brand new axle. The new axle side is the one eating seals. Needless to say I did this before I got on here and saw how big a huge pile of steaming dog feces the 35 was. Really sucks because this damn 35 has a LSD and will lay 2 black marks with dang near 200k on it!

Wow guys, way to not read the original post! Save yourself some money and put a readilly available Chrysler 8.25 in it instead. A fully built Dana 35 with all the bells and whistles is not as strong as a stock 8.25.
