shocks. yup.

i am curious about running 4 shocks on my rear end instead of having any sway bars. i have the extra mounts available and the shocks . i can triangulate the extra set to be at a angle to keep the body from swaying back and forth. or am i smoking rocks with this idea?

For one thing, you don't need a swaybar on the rear end. Remove it- you won't be able to tell the difference.

Are you talking about using shocks for sortof steering stabilizers to center the track of your back end? Are you getting that much sway in your leaf springs?

im not to sure on the shock thing but i know a lot of people who took the rear swaybars out and don't have any problems at all, so theoretically you could probably pull it off as long as you get the right angles for the shocks

You might mock up what you're talking about in MS paint. I think I understand what you're getting at and it sounds like a cool idea... just not sure how necessary it is on an XJ.

fare enough gents i will try to do a rough drawing. i just want to keep my cab from swaying back and forth like a hookers hips on a pay day friday .

Seems reasonable but you'll definitely need to make strong mounts and decide what size shocks to use. Also on a side note, in my opinion I think using as shallow of an angle as possible and putting the bottom mounts of the new shocks as close to the bottom mounts of the stock mounts would make the most sense cause it would support more of the axle.

My opinion: Throw the sway bar away, keep the hardware, makes nice bar pin eliminators. Go with the green set up you drew and forget about the red, it'll all be good.

i have extra mounts i have cut from some axles i can put in and weld in to a boxed bracket. i just want to keep the sway out of the chassie . i am all a soft ride on the trail.

also any other ideas or input that are on the affordable side?

Doubt you'd be able to run both sets because you'll have issues getting them set at different angles that will work the same with the movement of the axle.

Why do you want more shocks?
Also your design won't do anything for body roll...

i figure a shock at 45 degree will suck up some of the body roll. will out stiffening the ride as if it were up right like the factory one.

Also: If you notice exasperated body roll, your suspension has probably **** the bed.

all my sus is new. so thtats not it yet.

and running a sway bar on trail is crummy. thats why i am trying to find a solution. other than a sway bar. figure theres got to be some thing i may be able to do . i don't have my front and today the rear is now cut in-half and in the recycle.

ok if tilting a set of shock like the pic shows wont suppress body roll. will it let me articulate more?

if there's no way other than a sway bar i am just going to move my shock mounts up and weld emm back on so they dont get snagged on stuff .

You will notice the front swaybar being gone more than the rear. Did you honestly notice the body roll when you took out your rear swaybar?
I would suspect that shock placement wouldn't let you articulate as well.
You have many things to consider here:
1. suspension geometry
2. shock type, valving, length.

Imagine the suspension being compressed with the angles you have now. It just doesn't look like it would be smooth. Imagine both sides being compressed at the same time. What is going to happen?
