I want to keep my D30. Not doing to much.33s max maybe 4.5-5.5" of lift. I think a 29spline 8.25 in the rear with a no slip when I got the spare cash. so a selectable is ideal for the front?

I would recommend if you have the cash and are gonna wheel your XJ then a selectable up front is perfect in weather like ours where we see a good amount of snow and need the 4wd traction at times. An auto locker in the front just ruins your 4wd option when you need it most.

it depends on driving style. there are lots of people on either side of the fence. Ive noticed in ice that when I lose traction (open diff or locked) that both spin anyway, so not much of a difference. However, locked vs unlocked I always seem to slide less locked

not true, a detroit along with any lunch box locker is always locked, only when one wheel/axle shaft is pushed forward as in a turn it will allow it to unlock and ratchet.
sort of like a ratchet you have in your tool box it will ratchet one way but lock the other.
