Not necessarily. They started the 29 spline in the later part of 96. So it is possible that you have 2 different spline counts. Now that's not all that bad if this is the case. You could just remove the carrier, pinion and the shafts to the other axle. you have all the parts to do it. If one is s 27 and one is a 29, you need to change the carrier anyway because the shafts wont fit.

Haha, go figure. I'll make sure to check spline counts before I swap the diffs. I've got a full spare differential and a spare set of shafts in the garage too, so I SHOULD be good no matter what happens.

Good deal. If this was me and I had to swap all this stuff, I'd put new seals in all the way around. Just a thought. Good luck on your swap!

I will be. I had just put all new seals/bearings in the locked axle like a week or two before it met that boulder. Go figure......

The axle that will be getting the locker swapped into it I already replaced the outter seals on when I serviced the diff.

Also to add, I've got a custom axle skid plate to install too. I installed the front one already when I swapped that axle (during the coldest week of the year... Nothing like swapping an axle in the middle of my icy back yard in negative seven degree weather and 30mph winds. I'll never forget that weekend....) I need to fit new brake lines to fit around the skid plate mounting brackets though... another thing to be done when I do this whole swap as there is no sense doing it now.

The axle that is under my Jeep now is a stock 8.25. I broke one shock stud off and cracked the tube on the locked one, so I bought a stock unit off of a buddy and threw it under the Jeep to get me through the winter (Daily driver). Now I want to take the locker from my old axle and swap it into the new one, rather than getting junk welded back together. I bought the locked axle already setup, so I don't know how they are installed. The instructions off of their site were a bit hard to follow. (For me anyway... I'm very mechanically inclined and a fast learner, but I'm a visual type of person... If I can't see it directly, I'm screwed.)

Good eye on the disk swap... I have all the parts sitting in my garage right now and I will be installing that setup at the same time as the locker since I have to crack the diff open to do the disks anyway. (I swear by Royal Purple gear oil, but the ?&%$# expensive after you've opened your diff 8-10 times.)

Thanks for the comments guys.... We'll get this done eventually.
I have a powertrax locker in my jeep and would be willing to ship you the spacer key that you need because I already used it to install my locker. No charge..hell i even have the original instructions if you need them
