I have a stock 8.25 axle and a locked 8.25 axle (powertrax). I want to swap the locker that's currently in the one axle into the stock axle. What do I need to know to swap a currently installed locker into a stock axle?
I didn't install the first locker, I bought the axle with it already installed off of craigslist and strapped it under the Jeep.
I searched and couldn't find anything besides initial install instructions (that require a spacer key I don't have)

If there the same gear ratio why not just swap the whole axle?I can swap an axle faster than I can install a locker. You wont have to crack the cover open or look for any parts that you don't have.

If you swap it you don't have to ASSUME anything..Time wise and dificulty wise are about the same imho. All in what your better at or faster at really.Hoopers way is probably a little less physical but I would swap because I have done mine so many times its not a big deal anymore and I hate gear oil!!!!!!

well if the spline count is not the same he HAS to swap the axles so that point is moot. If youve got the right setup and a buddy to help with the axle its a lot easier, but if youre working on your own putting that new axle up can get real difficult. I put my axle in by myself with a jack and a ratchet strap, bit pain in the back side

in his origional post it says that he already has the locked axle under his jeep. In his sig he says that there is a disk swap in the works. Im assuming that he is building another axle to swap in and wants to swap the locker that is already under the jeep into it.
so to try and answer the question. If you have looked up directions for it just reverse it. I have no direct knowledge of this perticular locker but the lunchbox lockers in general are pretty easy. there are usually some springs and pins, pop out the springs, push the pins over, and dissasemble. the worst part will probably be pulling the c-clip out of the first side. I am dreading pulling mine apart.
Just follow the directions backwards and reinstall. shouldnt really be too bad.

I have a powertrax locker in my jeep and would be willing to ship you the spacer key that you need because I already used it to install my locker. No charge..hell i even have the original instructions if you need them

Alright, time to clear things up a bit.
The axle that is under my Jeep now is a stock 8.25. I broke one shock stud off and cracked the tube on the locked one, so I bought a stock unit off of a buddy and threw it under the Jeep to get me through the winter (Daily driver). Now I want to take the locker from my old axle and swap it into the new one, rather than getting junk welded back together. I bought the locked axle already setup, so I don't know how they are installed. The instructions off of their site were a bit hard to follow. (For me anyway... I'm very mechanically inclined and a fast learner, but I'm a visual type of person... If I can't see it directly, I'm screwed.)
Good eye on the disk swap... I have all the parts sitting in my garage right now and I will be installing that setup at the same time as the locker since I have to crack the diff open to do the disks anyway. (I swear by Royal Purple gear oil, but the ?&%$# expensive after you've opened your diff 8-10 times.)
**Both axles are out of '96 Xj's with no special options, same transmissions, and same gear ratio. I would assume spline counts are the same.
Thanks for the comments guys.... We'll get this done eventually.
