93 2 door 4x4 5 speed xj with chrysler 8.25 rear end..

looking for a detroit type locker for taking her in the dunes.. been doing pretty good with open diff but its time to get her locked up.. tires will never be bigger than 30x9,50 and it will be purely road, and sand.. i'm not really interested i becoming an expert on all the different brands as a quick search reveals there are plenty to choose from i just figure i'll let the experts steer me in the right direction..

which locker is a great bang for buck, and where do i get it for a good price from a good source..??

A lunch box locker is your best option. No need to remove the carrier to install one.

I recommend a Powertrax NoSlip. Virtually invisible on the road and incredible performance off road. And it's the quietest lunch box lockers ever made.

how do i know how many spline mine is without taking it apart?? is every 93 xj with 8.25 a 29 spline?

 

If it's the original axle it's a 27 spline.
29 spline shafts were introduced mid way through the '96 model year.

Just noticed the locker in Post 6 is for a Trac-lock (LSD carrier). If you have an open carrier you'll need this one:

There's also a Lock-Right available but the NoSlip is a better locker IMHO.

 

I run a lock-right in the rear of my 95 with an AX15, overall i dont really care for it. It was supper cheap and already worn in so idk. Be ready to get use to a locker on the street. They are much harsher and jerkier with a manual than an auto.

 

so just jumping into this forum. i have an 87 xj, 4spd auto with d30 front and d35 rear. i was thinking of locking it up at least in the rear just for the fun of it. (i do a fair amount of hard four wheeling on everything from sandstone to granite) i have a 3.5in lift and 31X10.50s not going any bigger.

i have had two recommendations, the powertrax no-slip, and lockright. from what i found so far the are both good cheap lockers, but i was told the lockright doesnt do well with big tires.

whats your guys opinion?

 

 

Everybody above pretty much hit the nail on the head.
In the 1993 year you have the 27 spline and Aussie only makes the 29 spline for the 8.25. So that's no good for you unless you change the carrier and shafts.
I've hear the Powertracks are super quiet but they are more expensive than the normal lunchbox locker.
I wish Spartan would make an 8.25 locker. I love my Dana 30 locker from them. And they provide the new cross pin as well.
Powertraxx and lock-rite are really gonna be the way to go if it's a cost issue at all for the axle set up that you have.

And if you think you're not gonna go bigger in tire size in the future, you are sadly mistaken. Jeeps are a sickness. You ALWAYS go bigger.

 

how bout i dont plan on going any bigger any time soon, like in the next 10 years. (im an 18 year old in the middle of college while only working a part time job, i dont exactly have a lot of money to spend)

but do you have a preference of any of the lockers being talked about here?
