Larger Cams
I was doing my build on my 1999 Cherokee 4.0L w/ OBD2 and I was wondering if anyone knew where to look for a larger camshaft because I wanted to get larger can lift before I got my supercharger. FYI, I gave up on the twin charger idea and I’m just going to run a supercharger

Another quick question. Do you need to have a stroker set up to install larger cams? Because I found one that people really recommend and it has fitments for 4.2L L6 engines instead of the stock 4.0L. So would I have to port and polish the engine to install the cams?

I can tell by your comments you’re out of your wheel house . No you don’t have to have a stroker to run a larger cam ( there’s only one cam in a 4.0) . The 4.2 was the predecessor to the 4.0 it isn’t a stroker . Porting and polishing isn’t something you do to your “engine” . Porting and polishing is something you do to smooth the intake and exhaust ports of your cylinder head to improve the quality and quantity of the air flow. Before answering any of your questions what is your goal and what is your budget ? .

CompCams can custom make you one to spec, also Clegg and Lunati both have a cam for the 4.0.
Crower could probably build you whatever you want as well
On a stock 4.0 you aren't going to gain much HP from a cam swap (probably 10 hp honestly), but if you are running FI or a stroker you will definitely see a gain (more with a turbo though)

I have a larger cam in my Comanche, but with a larger cam comes (most likely) at the minimum different valve springs so you don't get valve float at low rpms. Their reasoning to recommend against a cam in a 4.0 is that it will result in a poor idle in a fuel injected vehicle, but that would only be a serious cam. I wish I had the money to throw my Comanche up on a dyno and see what she'd pull, although the cam isn't the only thing done to it. I'll admit I didn't know much about cams when I bought mine, but that's why I relied on a guy who knew them much better than I and had run the cam reliably in a fuel injected 4.0. I also know that I don't know anything about forced induction and how to make it work, and that is why for now I will settle for my vehicles the way they are until I learn enough or stumble upon someone who wants to teach me and guide my along the way. Engine math is wild and I'd love to learn strokers and cams and forced induction, but for now I'll play it safe.

You could pick up some non adjustable 1.7 harland sharps and get appx the same gains with much less work put into it. The gains are small either way.
I still want to know the specifics of how you are tuning for the SC. The vast majority of us are just here to help and see some build threads.
