The 89 prob had the non HO 4.0 and pushed 177 HP. The 00 has the HO and puts out 190 HP. Leaving out the fact that the 89 is 11 years older......

it is what it is eventaully going to get 4.56s gears down the road
Like I stated, I have a manual and when I had 3.07s with 29s it sucked. I wheel my Cherokee, and run mostly mountain trails. 33s with 3.07s, I wouldn't even try it, that is why in my opinion he should buy the two 31s and go to the 33s when he can afford gears. If he lives where it is flat and doesn't wheel that much maybe it wouldn't suck to bad, but it would still suck.

89 has a fresh rebuilt 93 HO and 27s. 00 has a fresh rebuild with 33s. shouldnt be that big of a difference.

You didn't say anything about what transmission each has or what gear ratio, if the 89 has a manual with 3.07s and the 2000 is an auto with 3.55 or 3.73s that would make more difference than the horsepower.

True. Adding 3.55/3.73s to a manual XJ is like adding 4.10s to an auto transmission XJ.

both are auto. 00 has 3.55, pretty sure 89 has the same. but even if it had 3.07 it still wouldnt make up for the power difference.

Your point is? Saying dad ran a Jeep with 36s and it had enough power isn't saying anything about what the OP is asking.

The OP asked for our opinion on buying two 31s for his Cherokee or a set of 33s. He has 3.07s and he has stated that it is kind of a dog already.

I run 8psi in them just fine. Thinner rim will let you run lower psi.

I'm at 3" all the way around with 33x12.5 and its trimmed pretty high in the front but it doesn't rub and the rears are just cut and folded and 33s tuck perfect in there but I'm still running a sway bar in the rear in these pics and that fully stuffed up front but I still have more droop but just to give you and idea

Okay, just to clear this up. I have a 1994 Cherokee. AX-15 manual transmission, 4.0 HO. I had the stock 3.07 gears and switched to 32x11.5 KM2's. Keep in mind I have Yella Terra roller rockers, Edelbrock shorty headers, a polished an ported head, AEM brute force intake all pushing around 250hp. With 3.07's, anything bigger than a 30" tire is a total dog. When I put on the 32's, gas mileage dropped to 10mpg on a good day. I re-geared to 4.10's and the Jeep is awesome. 15mpg in the city, 19-20 mpg on the highway. All shift points have move back into the normal range. If you going to put on bigger tires, bite the bullet and re-gear, or suffer the consequences!
