iron rock hNt with dana 35 np231 install
Trying to fix some bad vibes Ive been having since i did a 4.5" lift. I picked up a junkyard front drive shaft off an auto 2000 xj. It measures about 31" collapsed and 34" fully extended. Right now im waiting for the hNt to arrive via fedex. I just removed the rear drive shaft. Im about to remove transfer case drop spacers. Heres some pics of the drive shaft. Ill update as i move along. Its about 30 and sunny so ill be taking breaks in between steps. ill take a bunch of pics to.

ok my hNt came in late so i lost daylight. how much travel does my drive shaft need once installed. ive been doing some math and seems like it will have only 3/4" till fully compressed is this enough? or im gonna need to look for a shorter drive shaft

worst case you could have that one cut down shouldn't be too much. shortening is always cheaper than adding length.. and I suppose that applies to just about everything...

most driveshafts are built w/ 5 " travel, ideal is 2" in 3" out. but you really need to get the new hnt yoke on then measure yoke to yoke. i did a 4.5 " lift & a stock frt ds was too long. had it cut down ,rebuilt & rebalanced.

i marked and cut 1 3/4" off the transfer case shaft. i put it reverse to let the shaft spin while i made the cut. the yoke ended up being about 1/4 to long so i cut it. than i slipped it on and marked center by using 3/8" drill bit. than drilled with 1/4" than 5/16". than tapped with 3/8"-16 tap. than everything just bolted right up.

than i marked with 3/8" drill bit. remember if you do it this way dont drill deep at all.

now after test drive im still getting some vibes but nothing like before. it could be possible that i have a bad pinion/carrier bearings. i also still need to get an alignment cause i just recently put the lift on. i have a dana 35 so i wanna pick up a 8.25 anyway.

Update. Ive been thinking my pinion angle was wrong but it turns out my turdyfive is going out. So I just bought a 8.25 from a 01 that im gonna install. since 8.25 is about 1" longer I think a front manual shaft will get the job down. Im running an auto shaft now. Is anyone running a stock manual shaft with 8.25? I only been seeing people using auto ones. Anyone have a manual shaft forsale?
