So, the rear dome light was missing when I got my XJ. In thinking... What if i ran some strip LEDs. Some real bright ones. Or a nice bar. One on the inside back windows. And wire the switch into the dome light? I have no idea how to do that. But it doesnt seem all that crazy.

 

You want an led light bar inside your jeep? Why not just go to a junkyard and find a dome light and then go to the buy and sell section and purchase an led replacement set from one of the members here.

 

I thought that too. But I'm looking to be a little different. And with the amount of time I know I'll be going in and out of the back, I'd like to have good light. I used to own an old Tahoe. Loved it. But the back light sucked when I'd be getting things out of the back. When you reach in, you block the light and can't see anyways. So 2 bars down the inside would be awesome I think.

I guess you could get cheapies from amazon or eBay. Your idea of being different by putting light bars in the hatch is a little crazy though haha. Post pics when you finish

 

Absolutely! I'm not talking something crazy. Just enough. I'm going to strip the fabric from the headliner as its all sagging and fiberglass the whole thing. And or new speakers in the back. Run the lights. I just have to figure how to wire it into the dome so it switches on with the rest of the lights when you open the car, hit the switch etc.

Bars will be overkill, it'll whitewash everything out and you wont be able to see after you get your stuff out.

advance/autozone/walmart sells color change LED strips, white and red would be cool so you can keep your eyes adjusted to darkness with the red.

The LED dome light he sells is plenty BRIGHT!!!

 

Yeah see I woukd still fix the dome light and just run the lights you want to a switch. You wouldn't want a light bar on every time you open the hatch

 

That may actually be the easier of the options. Still in the works. Thanks for the heads up. I'll post what I wind up with.

 

The dome lights are on a constant hot with the ground being provided from different sources too. Either a ground from the head light switch or the internal switch on the light.

 

Hey Heartlesshigs. I had a Ford Focus in the UK that came with no back seat lights so I put in two short LED bars. They came with very long leads which I ran along the roof trim to the front dome light. I wired them in parallel with the existing dome light. First twist the two positive wires from the LEDs together and then the two negative wires together. Pull the existing tubular bulb in the dome light and fasten the positive twisted wires to one bulb mounting post and the negative twisted wires to the other bulb mounting post. Put the bulb back in (I replaced this bulb with an LED bulb). Your LED bars will now turn on and off with the dome light.
