instrument panel up grade
I have a 1990 Cherokee XJ with the big fuel guage, I would like to swap it out for a panel with a tach. Does anyone know what year I should look for? My panel uses a cable to drive the speedo.

Not sure years, but if you call a junk yard they should know. Speedo is still cable driven, I was told to get the short, upper cable just in case my existing one didn't work. I don't think there was any difference but you might want to get it just in case. Also, you'll need to change the oil pressure and coolant temp sending units. Cheap and easy to do.

Shorter cable is for an auto longer cable is for manual I know that much.
Also the 93 parts jeep I have is all electric gauges so I'd stick with '84-'90 if you can.

84 to 90 is all you can use. It has a blue case, not a white one like the HOs.
You also need the Oil pressure sending unit, and water temp sending unit if going from idiot lights to gauges.

On this subject, but a later year, on my '96 which coolant temp sending unit needs to be replaced? The one on the thermostat housing or the one near the firewall? I'm guessing firewall as I believe that's the one I did on my '89.
Thanks.
Thanks.

If your present cluster has the gauges, which it can with the big speedo, I think 89 0r 90 would be easiest.
Either way, they'll swap right in as long as you have the upper speedo cable for the cluster you're using. The way that cable attached to the speedo is the only issue.
