I'm not saying that you can't hydro lock an engine and have it be fine because you can It's just more a matter of the volume of water you are trying to compress.

Here is what most people do not understand.

Your cylinder is timed with the valves. The intake valves can only suck so much in within a split second of time. If its enough it kills the spark and causes a dead cylinder. Most off road trucks can hold quite a bit of water before they hydrolock. Enough that the cylinder looses spark way before hydrolock. Now some new cars have 0 clearance heads and a teaspoon can hydrolock them. But we are talking jeeps and common v8 motors.

What happens is the motor dies from loss of spark(whatever you want to call it) Then some of the cylinders if not all will have open valves. This is when the water fills the cylinder. Now once the cylinders are filled you can damage the motor by cranking it, and trying to start it. But not while its running. Even at idle a valve is only open for a split second at a time. Again it will lose spark way before hydrolock. This is why you can run your exhaust low and not worry about sucking in water, its exit only UNLESS your motor is dead, then it will take in water along with the intake valves.

So picture this, your truck dies and one or two cylinder suck in water because the valves are open. You pull your truck out and without thinking you crank it over to see if it will fire. Its does on 4 cylinders and has enough fire to bend the rods in the two cylinders that got partially filled with water when the truck died. This is the normal extreme case. Its still not common, but it can happen.

I am not arguing here. Being a mechanic I see this all the time. Mostly with atv's. Those guys love drowning out their machines! LOL

The guys on the videos don't have any carpet in their rigs. Besides TD engines: none sparks or distributor and pretty old: almost inexistent computers.

The 'only' problem with TD if some water enters to the engine, you can say goodbye to it.
Yea thats what I was saying with some of the cars today also. A teaspoon of water and its bent rod time.

These older trucks though you can literally dump water straight into the intake from a gallon jug and it chews it up and spits it out no problems.

Knowing this I have formed a theory that I use and to this day it has not let me down. If I come to a water crossing and it gets deep enough that I know I may drown out or rather starting to drown out, but others have made it. I floor it!

I know motors. At high rpm the valves are open more times and with more force, but much shorter duration. So in theory you will suck in the gas and air before the water or (emulsify if you will), water is much heavier. And it will rid the cylinder much faster of any water that gets in by the way of steam.

At an idle the intake valves give the water more time to come in to the cylinder in a liquid form.

I know im late but take out the carpet and use truck bed liner on the floor pan in case water gets in the floor it won't cause rust.

Good advice.

Never understood the reason for carpet? Must be cheap is all I can figure.

Carpet stains

Holds water

Collects dirt

Makes you buy floor mats.

It basically is a noise damper and looks good.
