if you are having issues with overheating, replace your tstat, and flush the cooling system. you might even replace the water pump. also make sure fans are working.

you can change to a open loop system if you want but the closed system will do just fine if redone in stock form... from the way you sound id say just go back with the factory system...

The primary weak point with the closed system is the pressure bottle. Ours are ****ing trash. If you get a better quality pressure bottle and cap, it will function just as well as an open system. I'll be converting mine, but that's cause I'm replacing most of it anyway.

^ yep... napa sells the whole bottle but mine swelled right up on the first start... there is a aftermarket stainless steel one you can buy made for the renix cherokees... i cant remember who makes it though... i swapped mine like ^him^ but i was already replacing everything... if i wasnt then i would have just left it...

Just convert it to a open system. I've done it and it runs a lot cooler now and it's a lot less of a hassle to burp it after servicing it.
I have a 88 XJ with a 94 XJ radiator and thermostat housing.
You will also have to plumb the newer style heater hoses to get rid of all the steel tubes by the pressure bottle and get a newer heat shut off valve.
I also use my pressure bottle as a reserve tank now.

Best thing I ever did was convert the wifes 89 to open system. Pulled rad, heater hoses and and heater valve from a 92. Both aw4s
