hood vents
i want to put vents on my xj hood and people tell me to put a pan under the vent to catch the rain. Do i need to have the pans under the vents or can i go with out the pans.

I thought of doing the same thing but finally decided not to. I would personally, no matter where the vents are, put pans underneath the vents. There are a bunch of right ups on here on how to do so. But I decided I might as well just but a cowl hood. They aren't too awful expensive. But will let the hot engine air out and you won't ruin anything cuz the chances of water getting in are slim. Plus I like the look of the hood. Then I can sell my stock hood to someone cheap so they can rip it apart to put hood vents in it. Haha. I don't think I could do that to my hood with out having another just in case.

Cowl hoods look awesome and they do serve their purpose. Except that they are in the $400-$500 range and then you have to pay to have them painted and clearcoated. You can get hood vents done for under $25.00 if you make them yourself.
You will find many arguements of drip pans for hood vents. My arguement was always......well, if you drive through deep puddles of water, what's the difference if the motor gets wet from the rain water? I did hood vents without pans in my FIL's jeep over a year ago. We've had plenty of rain, and a record amount of snow fall over last winter and he had no problems whatsoever. Guys will tell you that you'll ruin your electrical system ext... So I guess driving through deep puddles and mud the electrical parts just jump out of the way??

I have vents and don't use the pans. At the same time, I've had to replace my TPS twice to solve an irregular idle problem. I assume it is due to the sensors getting wet because I never had the issue pre-hoodvents.

You may have a wire corroded or something. I degrease and powerwash my engine about once a month and never had a problem. You don't get much more water than that.

I like the look of this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Fiber...Q5fAccessories
This would be an easy install
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Hood-...item19c653b4d6
this would look cool left polished and mounted backwards
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/POLIS...Q5fAccessories
as would this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-F...Q5fAccessories
again, mounted backwards
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Hood-...Q5fAccessories
this should work as well
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MOPAR...Q5fAccessories
this would be OK if it wasn't so tall, but it might be possible to mount some smaller auxiliary lights in the front
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Stree...Q5fAccessories
I think any of these with the opening facing towards the windshield would be good. Obviously, if the opening is above the level of the hood, there would be less chance of water just running in. With a screen it could keep critters out......and most are wide and tall enough to allow fitting of a fan to suck air out, or even an auxiliary oil or trans cooler.

Every one of them would work. No offense, but every one of them are hideous looking. They look cheesy and will look worse on an XJ. IMOP.
Here is a really cool DIY set of vents. I copied this users instructions on my FIL's Jeep and they came out awesome looking. I plan on doing them on mine as well. AND its super cheap to do.

After measureing the hood, I think some of the previously linked items are really too big. This looks like much better fit http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

x2, I have LeBarons and let Chery sit in the rain all the time without drip pans, never had any problems... hell I even hit the vents with the hose. They look factory if you do it right, which isn't hard by any means.
