Just got my first Jeep...a 2000 Cherokee with 80k on it. Put on a small lift last week, now I'm looking at tires. I found a steal on Craigslist for 30's mounted on alloy wheels. Before I bought them I thought I'd ask about the performance with the larger tire on the stock gears.

I go to college in Vermont so I do drive through mountains (yes I know, hills for you people out west). Is the transmission going to be "hunting" going up hills on the highway with 30's?

I searched beforehand, but couldn't find any threads for 30's specifically.

 

You'll be fine. It's not much bigger then a stock tire.

 

Im running 32 on a 3 in lift and mine are great no problems and mileage isnt bad either

 

Good stuff. From the research I did it seems like people have mixed opinions with 31's so hopefully this works out

 

30" tires should be fine. 31's and you would want to regear. Some say that its "alright" But I have 31's now with stock 3.55s and it sucks. That's why I'm swapping in axles with 4.10s this weekend.

 

theres is no need to regear with 31's the loss of power is minimal. Imho any one would be wasting there money to regear for 31's unless they had future plans! i personaly run 31's on my xj on stock 3.55's.

 

Once you get to 33's then it starts to suck.

 

I agree. I have an XJ with 31s and an MJ with stock tires and the difference is minimal.
