So Im soon going to install a legit HID kit in my Autopal H4 conversion headlights in my XJ. These autopals are designed to with cutoff fluting that emulates HIDs but I was wondering if buying headlight housings with actual fisheye projector lens in them would help from potentially blinding oncoming traffic? Maybe not these exactly, but something similar:

What do y'all think? Who here has used this fisheye projector style 7x6 headlights before? Oh also do you think that smoking the headlights would help "soften" the output a little? Enough to where I wouldnt get pulked over but not so much that they defeat the purpose of HIDs to begin with? lol. Thanks in advance.

I've seen your comments about the Autopal housings being designed to emulate an HID cut-off.Originally Posted by M4RK

Uh... Not on your life.
I ran the H4 Autopal/Putco/Silverstar combo for well over a year. Then I converted to a true HID setup with custom housings utilizing Morimoto projectors with high beam shutters. I can assure you that the cut-off of the Autopals is nothing at all like a true HID projector housing. The projector HID setup I have now is about 300% better than the Autopal setup.
Granted, the Autopal are designed with a better cut-off than a typical halogen or sealed beam, but at the end of the day, they are still designed for an H4/9003 bulb, not an HID setup.
As for your Ebay housing... It says they have glass lenses, so at there's that. Better than plastic that will yellow with age. However, who knows what the projector inside the main housing is made of, what its optical quality is, and what its projection pattern is. At $26, which is about what you'd pay for a dinner for two at the local barbeque joint that you'll crap out 4 hours later, I'm gonna say you'll get about $26 worth of quality. In other words, not much.
Also, there's no mention of a high beam shutter on those housings, so I doubt they have them, which means you'll effectively just have low beams all the time. Yeah, your bulbs may be hi/lo, but the high kicking on in the same projector housing as the low will just make the low beam projection brighter, not actually giving you greater height and width when you turn on the high beams.
Take some advice from a guy that spent months researching HID setups. Reading these forums, reviews, articles on other sites, etc. Get with a guy on here that goes by Choo_31. He has a sale thread where he has custom modded glass-lensed housings with Morimoto projectors inside that have high beam shutters for a terrific price. Yeah, they are considerably more than $26, but trust me when I say they are WELL worth the price. My headlights are now as good as anything you'll find on a BMW, Lexus, or Mercedes. Bright white, crisp light, with a terrific pattern and super sharp cut-off. Hands-down some of the best money I've spent on my XJ, and I've spent over $6000 so far.
Look up my profile and check out some of the posts I've made about HIDs. There are links in my posts to other resources and Choo's sale thread.

I'm with this guy ^ HID's belong in a proper HID Projector not in a H4 housing or any Ebay projector thats a piece of glass infront of the bulb Originally Posted by macgyver35

OK thanks for the info. I was just hoping that since money is super tight and rarely existent right now, I could use this HID kit my Brother gave me for my Jeep since my eye sight is poor and night driving is. Stressful because of it. I already bought the H4 bulbs for the kit my brother gave me because his kit had 9006 bulbs. Its discouraging knowing I wasted $20 on them from what y'all are telling me. I will look into that guys HID retrofitted headlights, but first I think I might have to try my luck with what I've got and see if I get pulled over. Thanks again.

I understand exactly where you are coming from. However, this is not merely an issue of being legal. Rather, it is an issue of safety. If your housings are not designed for the bulbs, the light will scatter. This will make it more difficult for you to see and can potentially blind oncoming traffic.Originally Posted by M4RK

There are ways to increase your light output safely. Check into the upgraded harness and autopal housings. Use these with a higher wattage bulb and you should be set. Not to mention, it is much cheaper than an HID retrofit.
OK I PMd Him. So what about these on eBay?
Goddamnit! Of course my pos tablet isn't letting my paste any links...great. The link is of HID 200mm headlights that come with ballasts and all that. Are those not real projectors? They're about $100. Choose wants $200 for His housings. These eBay headlights have what looks like actual projector housings built in the same way Choos are and Im assuming since they come with ballasts and the rest, that they're made for HIDs. Are they worth it?

With stock wire harness, sealed beam vs Cibie

Do it right and do it once!!
Be advised that if you don't upgrade to a supplemental harness using relays, your headlight switch will melt down at some point. Originally Posted by raypla
