Default Axle swap now ABS & Engine light on

Jeep:
2001 XJ, LP D30, D35, ABS

Mod:
Swapped in a HP D30 & Chry 8.25/29 spline

Issue:
ABS light is on now that I poop-canned the ABS Axles. A couple miles (while breaking in my new gears) the engine light came on. Not that this isn't standard Pratice with my 01, but my question is, is the ABS system a standalone system? Is it totally independent of the "Engine Light" computer system.

The axle swap went really good, couple little issues, but nothing I couldn't / can't handle, but since NY won't pass your inspection unless the engine light is off do I have to worry the systems "talk" to each other? I have NOT checked what code is on, just looking fir a little input.

Thanks Dan

Hopefully someone has a better answer.. But since you no longer have abs, you might need a ECU that is for non abs vehicle. There might also be a ABS module somewhere you need to unplug, to turn the system off.

Ya, was hoping for a better answer than that. thought that might be the cast though. I have to bring it to my buddy who owns a shop & will put it on the computer to see what codes are popin up.

Anyone else done an axle swap on a 99, 00, or 01?

thanks for the imput...

Seems like everyone pulls abs relay under the hood and or bulb from the dash with no problems.I dont know about inspection though none here where I live.

I had the same problem but no CEL on my 1998 when I went from D35 ABS to D44. I just pulled the ABS fuse and cut the lines and no light, no CEL. Yeah probably not the best way to do it, but works for me.

I've heard of pulling the fuse, can anyone post a picture of what fuse to pull? I read somewhere that there may be a relay to pull also.

I had to cut the wires in the rear & just unplugged the front wires. I thought I may have to either swap our the computer, or jump wires so the ABS thinks it working.

My brakes are 100% better now than they were before. if I could only figure this thing, I'd be golden. ABS light doesn't bother me & I'm not getting too worried yet about both lights as since I've had it (4 years now) the stupid light goes on at least once a year...

Thanks for the help so far, hope to get more thoughts. Think i'll drop it off tomorrow night at my buddies shop.

I think I pulled one or two fuses and a relay. There should be a diagram in your owner's manual. Nothing wrong with just doing a little experimenting pulling the fuses and seeing what happens.

There's a single ABS relay in the fusebox. Pull It. That'll get your ABS light off.

No idea what NY does for inspections though.

As for the Engine light i'd guess that's a totally separate stand alone issue.

Thanks, I'll dig into this a bit more, XJ's an 01, & even though it's the newest you can get, it never came with an owners manual. I think my Haynes book might have the same (similar) diagram.

Thanks, really hoping that they are 2 separate issues.

So close to having everything sorted out, finally!

Thanks guys.

If you want to keep the ABS, verify your axles have the rings and the sensor is close enough. I swapped a D44 and added ABS. Works great..

Wanted to follow up on this issue incase anyone is going through the same problems as I did.

Thanks to HS00XJ, the diagram basically says it all.

To get the ABS light off you gotta get to the Fuse Box under the hood on the passenger side. There is actually a similar diagram stating what fuses / relays run the ABS system.

Here is the Relay Box & cover:

You can see the relays & fuses I pulled.

After pulling the relays, I started up the XJ & this is what I saw on the dashboard..

The ABS light went off & the Check Engine light was still on (no big deal). I went to Auto Zone, & the codes are my typical Misfires on cylinders 1-6. I cleared the codes, drove it over 100 miles & it passed inspection.

Final Thoughts:
I believe this will be the same between 99,00, & 01, if you have the ABS system which in fact means you have the LP D30 & the D35 get your hands on a HP D30, & 8.25/29 spline axle & swap them in. After swappin them in pull the 2 fuses & 1 relay and you'll be good to go.......

Hope this helps someone else out in the future that is thinking about this mod (axle swap). It was a MAJOR concern of mine.

** As Always, thanks to the other members here on CF, got me through yet another Cheorkee debacle.....

Incorrect.

If you have ABS it's guaranteed you have a D35 in the rear. (8.25s and D44s) never came with ABS.

However, the HP D30 did come with ABS. (Difference is the tone ring on the shafts and obviously the sensor.)

Other then that you're spot on!
