Default Help ! 0331 Head cracked replacing with goodies, need help!

I want to replace the top end of my 4.0 2000 jeep cherokee as i have the dreaded cracked 0331 cylinder head problem. I need opinions on the parts im going to be purchasing over the next week.

Harland sharp 1.6 ratio rocker arms

from what i understand with my Cam choice and being that i own a 2000 XJ 4.0 i will need the earlier style jeep cam bolt spring and washer. hesco supplies this as well

Id like for yall here on the forum to let me know what else i would need to make this happen, and/if there are any issues with what im trying to do.

I believe that cam requires extra machining to the head to be able to run. Also you'll need different valve springs to run that cam. (Your links don't work) max lift with stock is typically .480 lift

If that's something that is gonna add to much cost to your plan the next best can is the Complete 68-200-4 cam. I did all my research on JeepStrokers.com and that cam is best for torque and still being able to use stock valves, head, pushrods.

You are correct on the bolt and spring setup. 99-01 use a retainer plate setup. Which is actually a better setup.

Your cam choice over the one I listed with produce just a bit more HP higher up in the rpm range. Really that cam is best for a stroker. The one I listed with produce a lot more down low and mid range torque whether 4.0 or stroker. Fwiw

Notice how im using the Titan cylinder head which already has oversize valves and high performance springs. so i dont care too much about stock springs
Everything is getting changed. is there any aggressive cam that works with the plate setup? Do the 505 Performance ones work? Stage 1 or 2. theres gotta be a better solution. my plan with the motor is to eventually do a mini Stroker with the 232 Crankshaft 4.0 rods and .060 over pistons to get the desired 4.2L

I get it a performance cylinder head but bigger valves and performance springs don't necessarily mean it will support over the stock valves lift limit of .480 lift.

Link for head shows flow but not the max lift or spring pressure of valve springs open/closed so I would call and get that info.

There is a few cam makes if I recall that can use the stock plate style cam retainer but really it's not a big deal either way.

If your going to do a stroker I would just do the 4.2 crank. You'll get more torque and same longevity out of the motor. With the mini stroker your very limited on your piston options compared to using the 4.2 crank. Your looking at a small gain vs cost doing the mini stroker.

I'm running a 4.5L stroker and picked up an extra 100ft lbs of torque with the cam I listed. You do that with a mini stroker you'd be lucky to gain 30lbs of torque and be spending more money to do it.

Im trying to run the motor like this, i like the fact that its mild. i like the fact that it makes exceptional power.

AMC 232 3.500" stroke crank
Jeep 4.0L 6.125" rods
Silvolite UEM-2229 +0.060" bore pistons
9.6:1 CR
CompCams 68-235-4 210/218 degree camshaft
Russ Pottenger ported HO 2.00"/1.55" 62cc cylinder head
Mopar/Victor 0.043" head gasket
0.040" quench height
Ford 24lb/hr injectors with adjustable FPR or MAP adjuster for '87-'95 engines, Ford 24lb/hr injectors for '96-'04 engines, '99-'00 Chevy LS1 26.2lb/hr injectors for '05-'06 engines
268hp @ 5300rpm, 303lbft @ 3900rpm

Bump

Do i need to run the older style timing cover as well? Im aware the cam can be installed without pulling the motor via removing radiator front clip and a number of other things to expose the timing cover and the front of the motor. However, can new cam bearings be installed without pulling the motor?

Yes you need to run the older timing cover to keep proper tension of the cam/bolt retainer setup.
