2 more things to question. Mine is 98 is just started the same. it blows cold until i rev the engine, then starts blowing warm air. Also about the exact same time this happened my check engine light came on. Does this sound related or coincidence? Just got this thing for free, and it's gonna be a dd. And we just got nice cold storm here in Erie. and another on way. Friend said he noticed spot of rad fluid other day, but i have seen nothing since, also no sweet smell either.
For any of you guys in here having problems...Give your cooling system a thorough complete check. While you're at it, throw a new thermostat in there (dont forget to get a gasket too) and fully check your radiator and hoses for any leaks. If the thermostat is stuck open, it will allow coolant over the block which will keep the engine cooler.
When you have the engine up to temp, pop your hood and feel the upper heater core hose. (Look for the two hoses running back to the firewall) It should be very warm to the touch. If you're having problems with your heat not being hot like I do, if you feel the lower hose, it should be much cooler. This indicates a clogged or defective heater core. I've read another thread on here where guys have flushed and backflushed this and it's amazing how much poop comes out. It's too cold here for me to do this procedure yet though.
Well for me in my 98 the ac dont work so i guess its the compressor and when i have the "heat" on lol it only comes out of the defroster. Nothing comes from the front vents or floor vent and the heat only works on full blast which is number 4. If u try any other number it doesnt even come out. Wtf? Haha. Dunno
As for your vents, definitely look into replacing the blower motor resistor. It's right under the dash under your glovebox. Common issue with these models

I would inspect the housing--doubtful you need to replace that. Definitely will need the new gasket. I put a 180 degree thermo in my XJ, a lot of people will argue over which is better, that or the standard 195. Looking back I might have put the 195 in, not sure if that would help with the heater core situation or not.

If you are losing coolant on the 2000-2001 and are not getting a puddle on the garage floor. Time to dig deeper.
Hopefully you guys just have gunked up heater cores or bad thermostats. Good luck.
