Simple and makes a HUGE difference.
Autopal $25 H4 housings off ebay ^ like that guy said.
Bulbs of your choice. I run 100w bulbs on my trail rig and 60w bulbs on my dd.
Then, this is the important part, either buy or build a headlight harness.
Building it is SIMPLE. http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoHeadlightLoom.htm
You need to upgrade your harness because:
1. The wire gauge is too small to support higher amperage draw from brighter headlights.
2. The factory harness runs directly thru the factory headlight switch... That in itself kills half the power you could get to the headlights.
You can run the harness with stock headlights and notice a huge difference.
Basically, for about 50 bucks you can have some kick *** headlights.

X2 what Lowrange says. This is the first upgrade I did on my jeep and what a huge difference it made.
www.rallylights.com has good prices on H4 kits and will build you a custom wiring harness if you don't have time to make one yourself.

If you don't wanna make your own harness, buy this one:
http://www.eautoworks.com/Putco-H4--...s-PRD7540.aspx
And here's a hokey write-up I did on installing the harness after installing 3 of them:
Cruiser’s Headlight Upgrade Harness Instructions
Absolutely plug and play. Remove grille and headlamp bulbs. I fed my harnesses from the passenger side starting between the battery and the back of the headlamp housing, over to the driver side. Plug the driver side bulb into the new harness. Attach the new harness's ground wire under one of the small bolts on the radiator support after scraping the paint off under it. Attach the harness to the existing harness behind the grille working toward the passenger side. . Plug the new harness plug into passenger headlamp. Plug original headlamp plug into receptacle on new harness. Attach the ground for the passenger side just like you did the driver side under a radiator support bolt. Attach relays with provided bracket on the passenger side inner fender. Connect power wires to battery.

I also went with $25 autopal with the 55/60w bulbs that come with it, Installing it with stock harness was improvement then making my own harness made a huge difference.

Same results here. I did the eautoworks harness first. Huge improvement as you say. The AutoPals have a clean cut in their pattern and don't blind on-coming drivers, even with my 100/90 bulbs.
