Default H1 style snorkel thoughts

I have only seen a few XJs with this type of snorkels. I know the cowl snorkel works fine, but I like the look. I bought a few parts to do a mock up to see it in person. The cap is 7'' around and the rest of the flex pipe that will be running into the stock air box will be 3''. I have not cut any holes yet and the cap is still in ruff shape. Anyone have any thoughts or comments on this type of snorkel.

I though about doing the same thing, but never got to the "buying parts and trying" level like you did. That sucks about the hood. Bummer.

I'm sure I can fab up something to get the hood all the way up or even set the snorkel back a little. I need to pull the cowl off and see. It will open enough to use the first hole for the hood prop thing.

I would like to see it when you are all done. I thought about doing one like that but not using the stock air box

I feel like the stock air box gives a little more protection.

What if you made the pipe come strait up out of the fender by the cowl and just cut a hole in the inner fender and run the hose through it.

I'm not sure if there would be enough room in the fender, but I do want to move it further over to the side.

I have been trying to do this as well. This is a very similar design to the one I've been working on. My concern is snow getting in. Any thoughts/ideas on this? BTW looks good, looking forward to the end result.

I have seen some post about guys worrying about that, but unless the snow builds up pretty deep I don't think it will be a problem. It does not snow here much. I was more worried about rain getting sucked up but after looking at the bottom of the River Raider hat mine will look something close to it. Then there is the regular snorkels that seem like they would easily scoop the rain into them.

Or you can use the standard snorkel cap. Maybe the angle it's cut at will let you open the hood all the way.

I was going to do same thing on my old jeep, I was going to run an M35A2 air intake mushroom cap. Can get on eBay fairly cheap and have a mesh underside like the photo above.

I have always wanted to build one of these;
http://www.jeephorizons.com/tech/snorkel/

Looks like it would be better than the stock airbox as far as watertightness goes. I still think the weak point is where the throttle body/intake manifold is though if you have old gaskets.

I do like the army-truck style snorkel though, looks pretty sick if you can get around the hood clearance issues. Maybe a quick-release of some sort for the mushroom snorkel thing?

Not sure if I am as committed to cutting the hood, and I prefer the way this looks over the cowl;

I dont like the a-pillar snorkel as much, too exposed. Would to see the mounting worked out so I can do the same!

investinwaffles- that is a great link! Pricey, but I like their way of getting around the problem we discussed.

I just noticed you can buy the caps separately. 55 bucks is not bad. It looks a little smaller than what I'm making and a hell of a lot better.

Yeah that makes sense.

I was thinking about something like that.

I'm not a fan of the spot the RR is mounted but better than the a piller mount.
