DOH, i was half asleep when I typed that.
I meant to say that I prefer it on the cowl, and not in a random spot on the hood. Looks way better in the pics that you posted vs the River Raider kit location

What about if you use some sort of thick, squishy rubber gasket on the flange of the mushroom snorkel, and then use some hood-pin style hold downs to "compress" the rubber down a little, while still keeping the snorkel attached securely? Then just remove the hood-pins and pull the mushroom off before opening the hood. Kind of a PITA but not the worst compromise.

I assume the pressure from the rubber gasket would keep the snorkel vibration dampened slightly as well so it doesn't make noise or anything.

As it sits now I can still check the oil and stuff just no major work without removing it. So if its kind of a pain to get off it will not be to bad seeing I will not have to do it often

Some ideas for materials and fab:

Neat idea if you can make it fit with the hood and all that. IMHO XJs are a little too small for that style and location.

I had read one of those. Lot more for TJs. Like you said more room. I found one for an XJ but the guy used a 4 inch hat and 2 inch tubing. Way to small IMO.

Just posted this in another thread but it seems snorkels are the talk on here lately. If you want to build your own setup and not make it look like you raided the plumbing department at Lowes, check out Donaldson.

they have all of the intake accessories you could ever want.

It's not too bad. Typically I find a OE or a heavy truck/equipment shop. They will usually let you get on their orders. Gotta be a little creative though.

I used to be an OEM with my last job so it was a bit easier then. It's definitely quality stuff.

Im doing this soon, using the 3" pvc flange under the cowl so I can switch out longer pieces if I know Im going into a deep water hole. Then the 6" end cap on top and modify it to "look nice". They do seem to be pretty popular but I like the look better then a standard snorkel and they are quite cheap to build.

Quote: I have seen some post about guys worrying about that, but unless the snow builds up pretty deep I don't think it will be a problem. It does not snow here much. I was more worried about rain getting sucked up but after looking at the bottom of the River Raider hat mine will look something close to it. Then there is the regular snorkels that seem like they would easily scoop the rain into them.

I'm sorry I'm 16 but I don't get what your saying about the bottom of the hat. Why are you not worried about rain anymore you didn't say why.

Dude. Why do u keep saying you are 16? It's getting real annoying. If u got a question to ask, that's cool, just don't include your age every time.

Because the way the RR looks on the bottom was the way I was going to do mine and they would not sell it if there was a problem with sucking up rain. I have decided not to build my own hat though seeing that the RR hat is only 60 bucks and I could never build one that nice. After X-mas I will get one.
