Grinding and poping sounds when turning in 4X4
Hi there,
I recently purchased a 00 xj.
When it is in 4X4 (both Hi and Low) and rolling and I turn the wheel sharp it makes a terrible poping and grinding sound.
It will not do this in 2X4 and the issue will not start until the wheels are turned.
After it starts and I straiten out the wheels it will continue to grind as I roll forward for a short period of time and then both sounds are gone.
I am stumped and can not see any wear marks on anything.
Any help or troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much!

Yes this is on pavement.
Also I forgot to mention that the jeep has what i was told was a 3.5" Rubicon express lift. It has both the upper and lower control arms.

Your jeep is not meant to driven on solid surfaces (ex. pavement), in 4x4, while turning. Your 4x4, should only be engaged, on non solid surfaces(ex. dirt, snow). In 4x4 your tires turn at same speed. When making a turn, 1 wheel, must turn at a different speed, too much grip on pavement for this to happen, therefore creating the binding popping sound you hear. This is a simplified explanation. Others may be able to clarify this better.

x3 check your u-joints. They shouldnt be super loose but should have some movement to them. I just replaced one of mine that had completely seized up and ended up having to cut it out because the caps wouldnt come off.

As stated a few times, check your U-Joints out or there is one more alternative.....
Keep driving in 4wd on dry pavement, do really tight circles, try to make it clunk and pop as much as possible. Whatever is popping will break in no time.
