So I finally have the XJ where I trust it in the mud. It will be this weekend and it is a 130foot pit thats maybe 1foot deep mud, fairly tacky stuff, so here goes......Should I run high side or low side in the transfer case? And, should I put it in drive or pick a gear, like second gear? Any info is good. I am gonna ask my friend that has a dedicated mud drag truck what he thinks too. HIs truck s way different thatn mine seeing it is a custom built Chevy with a 598BBC. Thanks guys.

Whether you need to run in Hi range or Lo range in the transfer case for mud depends mostly on what your gear ratio is and what size tires you are running.
If you are running 3.55s with 33s or 35s you had better be in Lo range because you wont be able to get enough wheel speed in Hi range to clean the lugs.

I have 3.55 on 33s and I tried a mud pit in 4h. It was around 2ft deep. I made it about half way and bogged. I don't know if it shifted into 2nd or I just ran out of steam. For this situation I want to do the mod dflinstone did in his post about holding it in hear downhill. It allows him to manually hold it in any gear. I think this would be an asset to trying to mud drag.

Yeah, I'm not to up on the Cherokee auto, but I think you could have it setup the same as, my Blazers th400 that had a manual shift control. It was great in the rocks and the snow, but I sort of missed the auto shifting when on the road.

31" tire and a foot of mud will drag the pumpkins. Hope you are locked F&R. I would recomend a the gear locking mod, so you can lock into 1 or 2, also hook up a switch to lock the converter. Do search on the selectable shifting mod, auto shifting will still work if you wire it up correctly. Do the run in 4HI, for low will just dig a hole in the mud. You want wheel speed that means 4HI, 4LO is used to REDUCE wheel speed and spin.

I live right across the street to a mud drag/ mud bog. I went over one day when they was having a free for all kinda deal. When i raced my jeep i just put the jeep in 4 High/Drive and held the gas pedal to the floor.
I did pretty good seeing i have a 1997 jeep cherokee With a 3 inch rough country lift and bfg street tires...
One time during the day i raced a guy in a 1985 chevy short bed with a 6 inch lift and 35 inch bfg km1s i did win that one and at the end the guy said (dam thats a quick little jeep, What do u got in it?) when i told him it was all stock he laughed and drove away like he didnt believe me??
Lets just say when i pulled up next to him and he reved his 350 the look on my face was like
then at the end i was like

The mud was maybe 6"s deep, and was completly packed...could've drove a prius through it...was still fun tho.
