GM SM-465 swap

So, i just sent my bellhousing into novak to have it drilled to mount to a sm-465, and am getting ready to either buy the adapter that mates the 465 to my 231, or just buy a 91+ gm t-case with the right drop. Just curious if anyone else has done this yet, or if I am one of the first. Looking for input on what was hard about it, just info in general. For those of you that dont know, the sm-465 is a 3 speed manual with a granny low gear. It was used from the early 60's till mid 80's i believe, they go for 50 bucks apiece around here, and I have never heard of one breaking. I am running one behind a 6.2 turbo diesel in my k5 buggy, they do not break. Did the math, and with that granny low, i can keep my 3.07's and have about the same crawl ratio as I would with an ax-15 and 4.10's. On top of that, in 3rd, going 75, with 33's it sits at 2100 rpms.

I bet it is cheaper to run a GM case than to buy the adapter.

Have you looked into where the shifter from the 465 will be?

I dismantled a full size bronco that had a np 435 and np 203/205 in it. I was going to put the tranny and t-case in a cherokee and quickly found that the shifter would be in the dash.

anytime someone says old 4speed I always say stuff a 203/205 behind it. get a GM 203 and a ford 205, and a gm to ford doubler kit. 1:1, 2:1, 4:1 and twin sticked.

I am actually going to try to put a np203/205 behind the AX-15. I believe that there is room for it

Get the Lomax 3-1 205 kit and you have a 1-1, 1.96-1, 3-1, and a 5.88-1 ratio. Makes for killer crawl ratios. ( works great for snow running! )

That would be a 203/lomax 205.

Lomax only makes the case for the gm 205 so he would have to swap in a passenger side diff front axle.

It sounds like he wants to keep the driver side drop.

The lomax kit is not at all cheap, but if they made a ford version I would buy it to go behind my 203...

A 3 spd.... WOW.. I wouldnt run it cause gear selection is your friend. As for what to run behind it.

I would find a drivers drop t-case that will bolt in with lil to no adapters. If I was going to run a doubler behind it.. it would be a 203/d300. Lots of aftermarket support, and just about bullet proof.

Measures under 17" long so shorter then a 231 w/o SYE

With stock ratio's you would have
1:1 2hi/4hi
2:1 2low/4hi
2.62 2hi/4lo
5.24 2lo/4lo


Also you could add a 4 to 1 kit to the rear.

Did I mention the ability to twin stick it and do front digs.


Was going to run this very setup in my truggy, but ended up using a 231 behind the 700r4 instead of a 203.. so even more reduction and less weight

Yes, they aren't cheap, but they work great, and are well worth the money. I know he would have to swap to the Pside drop, but figured since he is swapping everything else why not go all the way.

Ping-pong, the sm-465 is a four speed, with a granny low. I think the granny ratio in the sm-465 is 6.55 to 1 so it gives you a good start on crawl ratio.
The gear ratios are:
First or granny low: 6.55 to 1
Second: 3.58 to 1
Third: 1.57 to 1
Fourth: 1.00 to 1

Thanks for correcting me...I didnt think GM made a 3spd sm465.. but whatever.


Correct me if I am wrong.. dont you have to do some machining to fit the lomax gears?


I say run one of the GM np231c/208 case as a range box use a D&D machine/Madrooster/ style doubler. The complete length of that is around 20". Front and rear driveshafts will be close to the same length.


Crawl ratio before axle gear in double low/1st gear

46.67792


That would be really low even with 3.55's or 4.10's.

with 3.55's ratio would be 165.7

with 4.10 would be 191.38


That is 4 cyl crawl ratio numbers

No, the Lomax comes with its own case and the gears.
Never heard of the set up your talking about, but it sounds very interesting.
The thing about the 203/205 is that it is super strong, nothing you would need to run in a Cherokee.

The 231 doublers have been around for a while. I have a 231/231 doubler in my xj, and I am installing a 231/d300 in My mj truggy.


It basically uses the front half/planetary part of the 231, with an adapter plate and intermediate shaft to connect it all together. Biggest issue is leaks on the range box.. and setting up the shifters
