gears and transmission question
does manual transmission differ from auto when putting in new gears?
if you have 4:10 gears in an auto trans and 4:10 in a 5spd
does the car accelerate the same and have the same power?

The 5 speed is a step lower in gearing actually. Which is why they cam stock with 3.07 gears, where as the auto came stock with 3.55 gears. 4.56 gears on an auto would be roughly the same as 4.10 gears on a manual. 4.10 on an auto would be like 3.91 (roughly) on a manual.

3.91 nobody has and i dont know if they even make them for these... Id say it would be closer to the 3.73's though...
I dont base my gear selections off these dumb charts because if this... Based off what engine? What tranny... The people who made these charts based it off whatever vehicle they have... I asked around... Whos got what drivetrain... What gears... What tires and how they like it for highway/road/offroad...
I ran 3.55's on my chop top 5 speed 4.0 with 30's... They were not big enough and my speedo was behind... Key is to gear to make your speedo the same as your stock settings with larger tires... I could have ran 32's and it be good... My mj is the same setup but im gonna run 34s and 4.10's this time... Because my MJ is a bit heavier then my stripped down chop top xj...
Hope this gives u an idea... Just watch peoples signatures... If there geared then they will have them listed almost every time... Lol... Jist PM them and ask how they like them in the different conditions i mentioned...

Generally speaking it is better to know what size tire you'll be running to give opinions on gearing. Here is what the gearing would be like for an auto and a manual with a 33 inch tall tire.
Automatic: 70 mph x 4.56 gears x 336 x .75 / 33 = 2438 rpm
Manual: 70 mph x 4.56 gears x 336 x .79 / 33 = 2568 rpm
The difference is only 130 rpm at 70 mph which isn't worth mentioning. Some think that first gear in the manual is to low with the 4.56 gears but my opinion is that it just makes it better for trails.

my xj plans for the future are 1991 xj AX15 5spd I6 4.0 HO 4.5lift 33's and 4:10 gears.
I'm pretty sure on all those decisions I'm just trying to learn about gearing now.
