Gearing question
I would like a little advice on this as well. I have a mostly stock 95 sport that I just put 32's on. Yesterday it was a little windy. Driving home from work ~65mph I noticed it would downshift much more than normal. All of my previous vehicles were manual transmissions. Is this "right" or would I benefit from a regear? If so, what kind of setup would I need to look into? Its all a foreign language to me at this point.
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!
The 3.55 or 3.07 that most of us have just don't cut it if you've got oversized tires. A 4.10 is a good starting place up to 33's. And if you've got an aggressive tire and like deep/steep terrain and like it in top gear on interstate, then a 4.56 is probably better suited for the job. Like I posted, I can get mine bogged with 235 dura tracs...
Or go all out with a 5.10... Might be overkill, but thats could be a matter of personal preference, too..

^ nothing over 4.88s is available for the d30 in a cherokee. Most gears also move to a 5.13 not a 5.10 after. Personally after driving my truck with 4.10s and 33s and moving to 4.88s the difference is night and day. If I was you I would drop in 4.56s should keep a good balance for low end in trails and freeway speed. My experience is with a SOHC 4.0 ford which has a little bit different torque band. The xj's make more lower hence why I say the higher gears

My buddies wrangler w/ 33's has 4.10's, I think. Either way he does a lot of highway driving and w/ the 3.55's he said it was almost easier to leave it in 3rd. But the 4.10's did the trick. As for the off road end of it, when you get into the thick and nasty, don't forget low range. It makes technical **** so much easier.. And... If you really wanna apply all the potential grip your tires have to offer, then lock it up. You can put a lunchbox locker in for about 400 all said and done... As for purchase/install of the R/P it's up to you, a lot of different options. I'm not gonna comment on which ones are good cause I'm still runnin stock gears.. But any shop worth it's weight can do a R/P install. Maybe try to find a shop that deals with either off road vehicles or with drive line components. Look around for a local jeep club for help. They might try to hit you up for moola, but that's ok too.. At least it's a worthy cause!
The only "off road shop" in the area is full of donkeys. Took the jeep there just after I bought it to have them throw in a wheel bearing and a new track bar. After the work was done and I got in the jeep to drive it away, the steering wheel was "straight" at 12 and 6. Walked back in to ask him about it and he informs me to go to a shop to have it aligned. Take it to the "alignment shop" of THEIR recommendation and I am told that I do not have enough adjustment left to straighten the wheel?!?!? Head over here to Cherokee Forum and after 10 min of searching, I find a nifty little trick with the "turnbuckle". A couple turns of a wrench a few twists of the wrists and a little joy ride, I have a straight steering wheel. Needless to say, the "shops" in the area are... well.... worthless.
That sucks man. Before I found my shop
one of the local chop sh.... I mean garage, yes, garage, said I needed a new whatever they said. So after wracking up a small bill for what I originally went in there for, I agree to the extra work, which tallies 200 by itself. A week later I'm at the shop of the guy I bought it from. (I'd originally gone to him but time was of the essence) so anyway, the xj is on the lift and I'm saying how they changed the u joint (I think) and my guy asks why then are there no marks on any of the bolts on hub indicating that it was pulled apart to allow for new joint? So we check the pass. side just to be sure. Nothing.
So I empathize, man! Hell, I don't even go to the guy I bought it from any more.. He started to get really repetitious with being a day or two late on completing the work. And for 39/hr. Labor, my guys do the best work around.. What can I say- honest, cheap, honest, really professional, I mean, these guys don't go get ****ed up every night and then come in all hungover, the owner is first to arrive/last to leave on all 6 days they are open, and on several occasions have steered me away from spending unnecessarily where they would have been able to make a fair amount of money themselves. Ok, enough of my ramblins...
