Default Gauge cluster swap?

I've got a 96 cherokee SE and it just has the idiot lights gas guage and speedometor I want to have all the normal guages tach, battery, temp, Etc. I've heard of using a dash from a different year cherokee to replace it and different sensors how would I figure out what year to use? And would I be able to use one from a 98?

I've thought about using add on guages but I would rather have them right there where there suppose to be.

Ideas? Or thoughts? dash VS add on guages? also any other good to have gauges? tranny temp?

Thanks in adavance!

Add it from any year up to 96. 97 it changed. Just change the bulbs to match what you have, and make sure you get a new oil and temp sender for gauge not light.

I'd try and get a full gauge cluster from the same year or one close to it, i know some years around 96 are the same, however i have an 01 so i know 97-01 is the same but not 100% sure about earlier models. you'll need new sending units for each gauge in order for it to function, the 96 and below dont "plug and play" like the 97+

Factory gauge cluster is fine. Depends on what your doing with your XJ as far as other gauges go. Heavy towing and you might want a trans temp gauge.

When I did my 96 SE I had to change the temp gauge sending unit(back of head, drivers side)and the oil pressure sending unit. Also if your running an automatic make sure to take out the up shift bulb if it's in the new cluster. It's the bulb below the "Check Engine" light.

Went ahead and pulled the cluster to remove the upshift bulb. Chrysler part# of the cluster I've got(back is white)is 56009014.

Okay so anything from 96 back? 95,94 area? I'm probably gonna get the cluster from the junk yard. Yea I thought I needed new sensors that were for guages not just lights And what do you mean change the bulbs to match? like resue mine in the same spots?

Thanks

Okay I'm gonna get a gauge cluster from the junk yard, I'm not doing any towing as of yet just my DD and some minor off roading and local trails, I was just wondering about the tranny guage cause I had seen it mantiond somewhere and hadn't heard of tranny guages before our truck doesn't have one and it's a 2500HD that came with a tow package.

Whats the up shift bulb? And I am running an auto wish I wasn't but I am.

Putting a new one in sounds a lot easier then I thought it would be once I get some money I'm gonna do it!

Also thanks for the part number but I'm gonna get one used anyway, tho I'd like one with a white back how much was yours if you don't mind me asking?

The upshift bulb is an arrow that lights up telling you when to shift your std trans to the next highest gear.

Installation is easy. I've got a tilt steering wheel which made it a bit more difficult.

My son picked mine up at the jy but can't remember what he paid. The part # I gave you is on a sticker at the top of the cluster. The back of the unit is white not the face of it. There is also one other unit that is I believe blue or green on the back. Just check the part # at the jy.

You need one from 91-96 the closer to the same year the better. But yeah it's plug and play. Unscrew the dash, pop off the bezel, put the new one in and your ready to go. Lol

90 and before were cable driven speedo etc
97 and up are OBDii and will NOT work with OBDi.

If you have dummy lights then I'm pretty sure you do.

Let us know how it goes and what you use. I also have a 96 that I just picked up and can't stand not having any gauges.
