Default Gauge Cluster Goes Dead

On my 1998 xj I will be driving and the whole cluster of gauges will go dead and the airbag light will come on. They will come right back when I tap on the panel a few times. It doesn't happen that often and is erratic in timing. Is there a way to fix this without replacing the whole cluster?

The last owner did say he added a new wiring harness. If that effects anything.
