I'd recommend locking front first. My XJ has a lock right in the front and Spartan rear. Happy with both even if it sounds like a roller coaster around turns

No.
Around here a rear locker is preferred since weight transfers to the rear axle when you're climbing rocks.

I locked my front first and have impressed the guys I wheel with and they have a locker up front and welded in the rear. I keep up pretty much every line they run but im ready to lock the rear also.

Most of us don't climb rocks on our daily drive.

I also prefer a rear locker. A Front locker will pull you up/through an obstacle while a rear will push you through. You have more weight up front to assist in traction on flat ground but unless you have RCVs or some other non u-joint shaft, It is a challenge in some terrain to have continuous power at the front without hopping all over/breaking stuff. (snow for example). Anything you can do to minimize that is a plus in my book. Like serious said, when your nose goes up, weight transfers back and the rear is more beneficial. I have had both in the past and prefer the rear... You can still use it in 2wd as well.

All personal preference. There is not really a right answer. I would never put a non- selectable in the front of a DD. I had a beater/mud XJ a few years back that I bought to destroy with welded diffs and it was miserable everwhere except in the mud.

What if your daily drive is through snowy, icy conditions? There are large swaths of the US that might experience that scenario.
