Default Driveshaft sye

I was reading that you can run a front driveshaft in the rear after you get an sye. I have a 98 4.0 auto.

I went to the junkyard to pull a front shaft but the shafts were different than mine. They were on older xj's pre-90's. Does it matter what year driveshaft I get and can some explain to me the differences in the different years?

I believe it's the front drive shaft out of a ZJ, but I could be wrong.

No they are the drive shafts out of xjs (maybe zjs too but I haven't heard that) but I think it has to be auto 4x4 4.0L and you will have to gt it extended or something.

Zj fronts and rears are longer. That's what I'm after on my next trip. Xj front, even old ones are cv style far as I know

Ok you can use an xj or zj front in the back after a lift an sye. The xj front will work up to about 5 inches of lift and the zj will do from 5 and up unless you get crazy

Well in my 98 the front shaft is a double cardan with a slip joint. Isn't that the kind I need and not the cv style shaft?

Some refer to them by CV or dual cardian either way they're a constant velocity style.

But there are other types of cv joints, and when I looked at the older style front drive shaft, they didn't look like a double cardan. Maybe someone with the older styel could post a pic, and I'll post one of mine in a bit?

It's easier to get a newish xj front ds and throw it in the rear. Get it properly lengthened for maximum efficiency

At 6 1/2 inches would I be better off with a zj shaft?

And does it matter what engine size I take it off? I got a trip coming up on sunday and I'm kinda pressed for time.
