Default Dana 489? Good? Bad? Heard of it?

Anyone have one of these in there xj? Or heard of one? I guess it's like a D44 but has 35 spline shafts. Was wondering how this would do in the rear and what size tires it could handle with an ARB air locker.

Its basicly a jeep jk dana 44,For what it cost and shipping your looking 3 grand for one axle. You could almost pay a shop to swap in 1 ton axles for that price.

I actually saw a Craiglist ad for wonton axles. I couldn't tell if the guy was joking or really thought it was spelled that way.

So I should just swap 1 tons in? Then I'd be good for sure right? I'm still learning all this stuff

If you want to run 37s off road hard and not walk back you need 1 ton axles. If you go to 35s you can build up your stock axles and wheel smart and not break anything. And honestly unless your trying to build a pro rock crawler 35s on a xj is more then big enough.

I don't wheel hard. Its my daily driver. I do a little rock crawling and mud and snow wheeling. I just want it to be reliable and not have to worry about breaking anything. At first I was just thinking about keeping my D35 rear and D30 front and just doing chromolly shafts in a bigger spline. I wanna run at least 35's and have an ARB air locker in the rear. What's your take on that Andrew?

So to keep it simple. A D44 rear would be just fine running 35's? Locker in the rear on stock shafts or go with chromolly on a D44?

And the front. Keep the D30? Swap with chromolly shafts and a bigger spline. Ok to run 35's? Keeping the front open. Don't need a locker.
How's this sound?

A rear dana 44 from a xj is rare to find and people charge a lot for them. The chrysler 8.25 is just as strong and easy to find. You want the 97 and newer 8.25 its 29 spline vs the 27 spline the older ones are.If you build up both axles the dana 30 and the 8.25 you will be fine on 35s.A lot of people wheel with that combo and tire size and do fine.

I've been so preoccupied with other repairs that I don't think I ever looked into want axels I have until now. I have a D30 in the front and D44 in the back. What are the specs/capabilities of a D44? Or where can I find this info out?

I can get one custom built. But if not then I'll go with the 8.25. I don't wheel super hard but I get a little rowdy you could say. I just want reliable. And be able to have a locker in the rear

Why spend more money on a custom axle when a used chrysler 8.25 will be 100 bucks or less.
