Default Dana 44 swap in 2000 XJ

ok so heres my situation. i've been debating what i want to do. i can either throw a locker in d35 and roll with it for a little or continue saving. so what i came up with is to put a dana 44 together this way i wont have a problem later on with my build.
my question is...

1) what years came with the dana 44 rear?

2) what years would swap in?

3) if nothing will swap right in what would i have to do for one to bolt in?

thanks for all the help!

The Xj Dana 44 were 87 to 89? Tow package. There are few on Craigslist from 200 to 400$ at the moment. If you want bolt in look for a 97+ Chrysler 8.25 bolts right in and is strong enough to hold up to 35s

the cherokee D44 from 87-89 cherokee's will bolt right in, but will need a shorter drive shaft if upgrading from the d35

thanks for the info. now i would just tuck the wire for the abs sensor aside and be done with it right? after getting ahold of one i plan on throwing in a locker in it before installing it. who makes a reliable locker that is still streetable? i see aussie lockers seem to be around the cheapest anyone ever run them before?

thanks again
Nick

I'm pretty sure you can put a ford 8.8 out of a 96 explorer. Strong and has disc brakes.

Edit: and 4.10 gearing and limited slip diff all stock

The ford 8.8 would be a good upgrade but it requires cutting off the spring perches and rewelding them on top

Gotcha. I knew it was possible but didn't know the work required.

I have a line on a Rear 44 from an 87 XJ for $150....I'm thinking about swapping it into my 99 in place of my D35, which seems to be a bolt in swap. I'm also doing an HD HnT SYE utilizing a front cherokee shaft. My question is this, Will it work withough shortening the DS?

It if helps, I'm on 4-4.5'' of lift
