dana 44 offset question
So i found a dana 44 on CL (seller claims its from axj) for a good price but its mentioned that its offset. Now i havent heard of a rear dana thats offset. has anyone came across this before or maybe installed it in their car? ive searched on google and found some images of it but nothing mentioning its from xj.
Any input will be appreciated.

any difference in the install? or would it be the same as regular waggy 44 (relocating the perches). any cons and pros of it? or should i just keep looking for an xj dana 44? does it effect the rear drive shaft and transfer case being in the middle?
Thanks
Thanks

well if its from a SJ or a J10 j20 its gona be a full width axle, so unless your fine with that your gona have to cut it down, other than that, some say it will eat u joints but the ford 8.8 is offset a little and no one has problems with that, i have one in the rear of my j10 and have plans on putting it in the xj once i get a dana 60

only thing i can think of is when you droop the passenger side wheel, the driveshaft will slip out further in the t-case, and less for the drivers side.
shouldn't matter tho. but i would cycle the rear suspension in the shop during install, just so you know how it all works.

since you don't own it, I would wait. i only see it being worth it if you swap the front too. which is a lot more work. because the FJ axles arent 5x4.5. most are 6x5.5 or 5x5.5 lug pattern which opens more cans of worms if your not doing the front with a matching lug pattern.

But if i change the axle shafts with the proper lug pattern will that work? i really dont want to change the rims as i just got them not too long ago with the tires. Plus im able to get the dana 44 offset from a 69 wagoneer for $30 or $40. that a good price for it, i think. well i got untill tomorrow afternoon to decide and its hard to find an xj dana out there.

If it is an offset rear it is just as far over as a front axle, not just a few inches. Your drive shaft will be at a 45 degree angle and will go thru u-joints very quickly if you can get them to turn without binding.

If you have to source other shafts to put into the D44 with an offset why not get another axle to start with... also. the only D44 with your current wheel pattern is that from an XJ. it's diff is not offset, and it is not the correct width for the shafts to interchange. just find a D44 from a XJ, its worth the wait. another choice is a 29 spline 8.25". Said to be just as strong or a TINY but weaker but nothing to worry about. do it right, do it once!
