Dana 44 confusion
Hey guys so I was wondering if 35's are to large for a dana 30, which I believe they are. So if I were to get 35's would I have to get dana 44's made for my specific year and model of my cherokee or could you get any random axle from a truck and just make it work. Also could a Dana 44 go bad from like to much rust or something? if I were to get one from the junk yard would I have to worry about overuse? Lastly if i only had the money for one axle, not both, would it be more of an necessity for front or rear?? I am in confusion

35s is when i've seen dana 30s start to break at the ring and pinion. yes they had chromo shafts and a full case selectable locker which was disengaged when it broke, so i blame the tiny ring gear. i'd say 33s are the safe limit for a dana 30 but others will comment how they've gotten a dana 30 to live through 35s. YMMV
A dana 44 from a pickup is like 8 inches wider then your stock one,Yeah some do run full width truck rear ends front and back but i wouldn't if its a daily driver. If you want a dana 44 that is close to the xj stock width is a jeep wagoneer 80 or newer but its 6 lug and from a leaf spring truck so you have to weld on all the mounting tabs you need.If money is no problem currie has bolt in dana 44 or ford 9 inch but your looking 2k up for that.Which rear axle you have now?If its a dana 35 that would need to be replaced first if its a chrysler 8.25 your good tell about 35ish with it.

I plan on sticking with my stock Dana 30 in ft. and Chrysler 8.25 in rear. I am in the process of gathering all my parts gears/axles/ARB locker for ft same for rear but using a full spool there for the time being.
I'm running 33x12:50x15's and plan on sticking with size. Power wise all I have is a 4.6 stroker being built and my drive line should hold up
I hope. Once you upgrade one thing you will find the next weakest link.Fred

With a dana 35 i would replace that first,A chrysler 8.25 was used in the xj its a bolt in and almost as strong as a dana 44.a ford 8.8 with the right up grades is pretty strong,Most do the explorer 8.8 because its easy to get and cheap the bolt pattern is the same.It does need to have new spring perches and shock mounts welded on to use in a xj.It is a tiny bit narrower but once you do the none c clip conversion kit its the perfect size then.A built up 8.8 will be even to a dana 44 maybe a tiny bit better. If you can weld or know someone that can look in the explorer 8.8 swap. And for the front do some searching on a wagoneer dana 44 swap tnt customs makes a truss that has all the mounting points so the swap would be easier.
