I have wondered for people with the CAD axle, if you could weld the spider gears, and then use the CAD to keep the axles free to spin separately in 2WD. Could this be useful for a dedicated "budget build" trail rig which might have to make the odd quick jaunt on the road? So, your front axle would essentially be free in 2WD, then fully locked in 4WD. I realize that one would have to trust the CAD an awful lot to consider doing this.. But hey, it's just an idea.. 

Certain Volvos had Dana 30s in the rear with LSDs from the factory. (You can actually seap thrm into a Jeep D30 front.) Shimming that to deal with a worn clutch pack makes some sense. Shimming your spiders to make them bind is insane. Welding is safer and more reliable by comparison lol
