I'm need to order a SYE as soon as possible and I can't for the life of me figure out what driveshaft will work.
01 XJ, 231 case, D35, ~4" of lift.
I was under the impression that you could use an auto 4.0 XJ's front shaft and it would be fine, but now ive been reading that only applies to the 8.25 and not the D35. I picked up an extra front shaft to use already and am pretty bummed now that I might not be able to use it.
Is there any SYE kit that will allow a stock XJ shaft to be used with my setup? Maybe that super short kit or something?
I know this has been beaten to death, but I can't risk losing my only vehicle until I can afford a custom shaft after installing the SYE.
Thanks

Check your area for a local driveshaft shop. You can get drive shafts extended, and it may be a lot cheaper than a fully custom shaft. Or just call one of them up and see what they say. A good start would be to measure from yoke to yoke, but you won't really know what that is until you install the SYE.

Ive also heard some ZJ shafts are longer than XJ shafts (idk about front or rear), you heard anything about that?
Just called up the local driveline shop and they quoted $125 to extend the shaft. Think that's a good deal or should I go for a new shaft? (not exactly sure what they run, just know they are expensive)

that's about what I paid to have a shaft lengthened and you are right about the ZJ shaft. it's the longest one and would prob work fine. Plus for $150 you could probably get an 8.25 from the junkyard or Craigslist
just reread your post
Iron rock has a hack n tap for just over a hundred bucks its the cheapest I know of and works great

I would check Craigslist for a front driveshaft and a rear axle

Any particular motor/trans/axle combo I should look for when pulling a ZJ (front or rear?) shaft?

Yeah that does make more sense now that I think about it. I should just get an 8.25.. I dont have ABS so it makes even more sense to do that. If I get an 8.25 I'll probably ditch the idea of an 8.8 until I break the 8.25.

That's a reasonable price, but as pointed out, you'd be better off simply getting an 8.25 from the yard. Right around the same price, or should be. No sense looking for a ZJ shaft and wasting more money when you won't even be sure the measurements are correct until your SYE is in anyways.
