Default d35/aussie locker ???

Lads my cherry has a d35 open *** end on it....
The tyres im running are 235/75 x 15(approx 30") on stock rims(mud tyres)..1.25" spidertrax spacers...

Most of my off road stuff will be in the mud and muddy forest....
I will be getting an IRO 4" shortarm lift next week for it.
The boys in the 4x4 club im joining are telling me to install a locker...

Now my question is:
If I install an Aussie locker and hardened aftermarket shafts will they last or am I just kidding my self...
The engine is a 2.5ltr turbo diesel(I live in ireland/european model xj) so Im thinking with the little engine and small tyres I may get away without snapping shafts....

Also, trying to get my hands on a d44 is near to none here in Ireland unless I import one(Big bucks...from the States to Here)

Your thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Don't lock the D35. It puts too much stress on an already weak axle. If you're installing HD 30 spline after market shafts it may be okay. I would just lock the front if I were you. If your xj is a 4x4 that is.

if you are sticking to a 31in tyre you will be fine i have a customer running 33s on the dana35 he is light on the pedal and has no problems.

you will have no problems with your d35, locking the front will not benifit you as much as the rear will

I've got an Aussie in the rear of mine. Not had it too long, but so far I'm loving it!

The key to the Dana 35 seems to be keep the tyres to 31" or less, and a light foot.

very true I think that locking your front, and keeping at 30/31" tire range you "should" be fine. But dont toss any $ into a 35 that you dont need to. save up and look for a dana 44 or 8.25 or ford 8.8. Much better axles and worth every penny.

^x2 The d/35 is possibly the worst rear axle ever built. The main problem is the axle housing flexes and breaks R&P and shafts. Adding aftermarket shafts would help some but putting any money into a d/35 is a waste of money.
I don't know how hard it is to find parts in Ireland, but I would be looking for a Chrysler 8.25 to swap in place of the d/35.

i'm looking at his application... muddy wooded trails won't cause the stress rocks do.. it is worth the aussie or i think spartan makes one for the d35 both are well under $400usd

I know that some guys get lucky with the d/35 and run them a long time and never have problems. I've also known guys that have busted them driving around town, and seen guys bust open d/35s in mud when they hit a root. I've seen them break when the weak axle tubes bent when dropping off a small ledge. If the OP wants to install a locker in one that is up to him. My opinion is that it is not a good idea to lock an axle that is as weak as the d/35.

I run a d35 locked with a Detroit. I wheel mostly in wooded area's and love it. Mine is also my DD and although I try to be gentle with it on the road I do jump into the throttle. General rule is 31's and down, with the wheeling that you say that you will be doing you should be ok if you don't really jump to hard into it. Remember that it is typically a weaker axle and will break if pushed hard.

In my opinion, you'll be fine

30" tires will not put that much stress on it.

To many people act as if the 35 will break just by looking at it wrong. 30" tires are well within the safe zone for that axle. Especially with a low reving diesel.

Lads I appreciate all your replies...And each one is taken on board....
There is not a hope in hell I can get a bigger axle/diff here in Ireland unless I import one from your side of the pond.....
For me just to get a 4" lift kit is costing 500 usd for shipping so imagine the cost of a full axle assembly to be sent over....
I will chance my arm and do the locker with the d35......The little diesel maxes out at around 3-3.5k rpm and puts the power on gentle and smooth like...

Like i said I appreciate the replies and have more positives than negatives so that will do me...

All the best
