D30 and 8.25 on big wheels
Has anyone done anything bigger than 35s with the d30 and Chrysler 8.25? There is a guy on youtube who puts 40s on his XJ with the D30 and the 8.25. He says he has yukon axles front and rear.
Has anyone done something this big with that set up? how hard can you push it?
thoughts?

It all depends on what your using it for. He uses his Jeep in for trail riding and mudding in the swamps, which is easier on parts than if you are rock crawling.
I currently have 35s with chromoly on the front and 1541h on the rear and actually haven't pushed it too hard as I mostly do mud, but I saw this guy on youtube and got curious about how hard you can push that set up

Yes I see that. But how far can you go rock crawling with chromoly in the front and 1541h in the 8.25? I just want to know how far has anyone gone with that setup to have as a reference for my built. I want to have a built a comanche but want it to be capable of doing multiple things, but not planning on doing any hardcore rock crawling.

YMMV
Yes I totally understand that, I just wanted to hear from someone who has used that set up what his or her experience was and how hard they pushed it till it broke. I know it all depends on how you drive your rig, but it is always good to hear from others how their experience was.

I'll save you the time. Some people run big tires on a D30 and they are fine. But they don't abuse their Jeep. Many of them don't even really go off road. But you'll find a lot of people who have busted a D30 off road.
The obstacle they are on is a factor. The size of the tire is a factor. Whether they have a locker or not is a factor. How hard they hit the skinny pedal is a huge factor. I've seen people bust a D30 on stock tires because they had more throttle than brains. I've seen people running huge tires on the street and they have no problem.
What are you really looking for? I gather that you want to run bigger tires but are afraid of busting the Dana 30 if you do.
So tell us what size tire you want to put on, where you want to take the Jeep, and describe your driving style. Once you do that, we can give you good advice.

In going to chime in here.
I have a non disconnect hp 30 on stock junk yard shafts & 31 spline 8.8 on stock shafts with 4.10s & the stock 4.0/AW4.
I've been trailering the thing for the last 2 years. The only thing that I have broken (other than drive shafts that were damaged by hitting rocks) is the passengers side axle u joint twice.
The reason is due to the 3/4 clip that holds the caps in worked loose under extreme conditions while rock crawling.
If you simply tack weld the caps in or install full circle clips the problem is eradicated. Now the weak link is hopefully the axle shaft or possibly the ring gear.
I ran my XJ with the one ton rigs in my club so dont think I didn't beat on it. It earned the nickname Honey Badger because it just doesn't care.
I ran 37 Put Bulls on it one time & it handled them the same as my 35 BFGS.
The hp 30 is alot stronger than people give it credit for.
FWIW, I would not run anything but stock shafts in a 30. All you are doing is making the ring gear the "fuse". Plus, that's all you need. If you are breaking stock shafts every trip out, you need to go to one tons.

Thanks, that is the kind of reply I am needing.

I'm running 37s on 17" steel beadlocks and trailer mine everywhere. I've yet to snap a u joint but have had to replace them after a thorough inspect after each wheeling trip. Lockers, gears and a smart foot will help them survive vs open diffs, stock gears, heavy foot. Its good to keep in mind the window of comfort only gets smaller the bigger you go. I play on rocks, that guy with the 40s goes into florida water and only needs to worry about hitting a gator.

Do what you want to do. Just remember, bigger tires change the final gear ratio. You can run 40s on stock gears, but at a cost. If you decide to actually run 40s on stock gearing and axles, you want to be trailering to the trails If you're going to be daily driving it, expect it to be a complete dog, with rpms and shift ranges so out of whack it's ridiculous. The toll it's gonna put on your transmission and engine are astronomical. Again, your choice.
You can choose to do whatever you want, but be educated about the choices you make, they all have consequences.

Agree, gearing is very important that’s why I only ran the 37s the one time.
Let me be clear, I was locked front, welded rear & drove it like I stole it: no joke.
