Cutting out cubby
I know there are several threads already regarding the XJ sub cubby space, however I am having trouble finding information on how exactly to cut the cubby out. I've heard to use a jigsaw, but how can you ensure you're not cutting too deep and damaging something behind the plastic cover? As much detail as possible would be very much appreciated.
If you couldn't guess, I'm trying to install a sub in this place and want to make an enclosed box instead of the spray-foam a lot of people seem to use. I'll most likely be using a 10" shallow sub, so it's only like 4" deep.
Thanks!

Ahh haha I had gotten the impression that people were jig-sawing it right out of their car before removing it. This makes a lot more sense. Thanks. Any other suggestions on installing the box?

the top picture is with the side panel back on. i cut the front panel of the box to match the shape of the plastic panel, and the rest of the box matches the opening in the second picture. i cut a hole in the plastic panel for the box to slide into, then i ran short screws thru the back of the plastic panel into the overhang of the front panel.
here's a picture of the first box i built for it so you can get an idea of how it was done.
the first one was for an 8" sub, but i decided i wanted a little more so i rebuilt it for the 10" .. and this box only sticks out 1/2" because the entire enclosure is behind the front panel

What volume should a box be for a 10" shallow sub. I know there are several "sub box volume calculators" out there, but they just calculate volume after you've put in dimension. I know how to do that, need to do the reverse. After I know the required volume, I can make a box with such dimensions that give the right volume.
