Engine: good old 4.0 with some parts like a 258 crank, .060 over, a cam, and bigger valves.
being 17, i get almost everything used. ive accepted this and am making the best of it. this is my second vehicle. my first was a 1998 5.9 with the deep slate paint. took it wheelin, killed the trans and fixed it. thats another story to tell another time. what i want to do is this summer take my sport with the 4.0 (was a 4.0. me and my dad built it over a few years, put in in another sport that was lifted and parked it for a week. the night before we go wheelin some drunk lady hits it, pushs it into our high millage DD. killed them bolth. took the motor and trans out and stored it.) i paid 800 for this jeep with a dead motor (rod was broken but not through the pan yet.) so we swaped the motor. its on the road now and im DDing this to school and back. currently im saving the funds for this swap. iv decided to go with the AX-15. would my transfercase work?. i know i need driveshafts, the bellhousing, flywheel, pedals, master/slave cylenders and some other stuff. my plan is to scout junkyards and find a wrecked one.

I can understand this. The AW4 is a fantastic transmission, but stick shifts are a lot more fun to drive on the street. Ever since I got my stroker I've been wishing I had a manual transmission behind it (but not enough to go through the hassle of changing it).

You may find it difficult to find one. I can't recall the last time I saw a manual XJ in the junk yard.
If you prefer the u-pull-it route, you might try searching on Row52.com to see what yards are within a day trip from you. I don't think they indicate the transmission type on the listings, but at least you can see the best places to scout. Not all yards are on there, so you'll also want to Google other yards near you.
You can sometimes find what you need using car-part.com. That's the same parts exchange that body shops use to find used parts for insurance repairs. You will find that prices vary wildly from yard to yard, and it's often worth the time to call the ones that list the part but don't list a price. Also keep in mind that the prices posted there are usually negotiable, so don't be afraid to try to talk them down.
Occasionally you can luck out on Craigslist. You can search all of Craigslist using searchtempest.com. I have actually seen AX15 transmissions come up on there where people were swapping the other direction.
Also be sure to check the member classified section of this board for parts. If there's something you're having trouble finding, post it in the wanted section, and someone who has what you need sitting around in his garage may come to your rescue.

iv herd it to be possable to fool the ECU into thinking there was still an auto behind it. from what iv herd, you add some resistors and it will think its still there.
your best bet hands down would be to buy a manual trans xj and use it to pull parts from. preferably one of the same or compatible model year. having everything on hand to do the swap will make it much easier. I'm planning the same swap, just waiting on the unicorn xj to be available for purchase.
